My DH had one when we got married...drove it on our honeymoon. It got almost 60 MPG with the bed full with our tent, various and sundry camping equipment and cooler. Yes, we went camping on our honeymoon LOL.

Ponder,
Stay out of California...the "Left Wingers" at the AQMD do not allow burning red diesel!! Oh...and WHO CARES if you can make it from LA to LA and back without buying fuel. I fail to understand your purpose.

That little VDub diesel is a nice engine, too bad it's in a VDub vehicle.
But if you are serious about getting the max mpg, find another engine. The VDub is a indirect injection design whereas most (all?) of the larger diesels are direct injection, and in general, the direct injection designs get better fuel consumption numbers.
Find yourself a nice little direct injection engine, not sure which, and put it into a little truck like the Ranger or S-10 and then see what you can do.

Well i care if I can make it or not.
MY Purpose is simple.
1) To roll with Disrespect on Duallies
2) To achieve maximum MPG
3) To roll self contained where I contribute nothing to communities outside Louisana. To have a garden on top my camper where i can use their sun, and use their social services while spending nothing
4) To tell people my intentions to see if it stirs them up
5) To reach Cali and make Reddog submit to my superior wisdom

I wasnt aware of that. I know i read once a guy put a little yanmar diesel in a corolla or something and banged 68 mpg, Europe has 80 mpg diesel cars
Maybe a later model Rabbit diesel engine could swap into the little pickup? I don't imagine they changed the basic design of the engine block and transaxle all that much over the years.
JP,
Of all the diesel rigs I've **owned, none was as bad as my '81 VW Dasher Diesel wagon. None.
The only good news was the MPG: average 38-40. Sometimes up to 45mpg. If you loaded it up though, the mpg's dropped precipitously down to maybe high 20's. So, a load affected it greatly. Why? No turbo. Normally aspirated. There's really not much you can do with a tiny 4 popper-oil burner with, what? , 53 HP?
We bought it new for about $13K, drove intermittently for about 28K miles, went through a couple starters (ever price one of those?), a couple complete electrical systems, radiator, complete charging system, complete fuel and filter system, all on warranty. It would never run more than 100 miles without the engine stopping with a clogged filter or some electrical failure. How, you say, do you have electrical problems with a simple mechanically injected diesel? YMMV.
My wife parked it one day and said, "That's it for me". She wouldn't go near it again. We had it towed to the dealer who gave us $3300 for it after 19 months of ownership. $10K loss in 19 months. Wasn't even paid for yet. It was worth it just make it go away.
The Rest:
**'73 Mercedes Benz 220D, classic automatic/4 door. Great machine, if under powered.
'79 Cadillac Seville Diesel (with the later, improved "Target" engine) Loved that car. Pimp white with red leather. I put a torque converter lockup switch on the TH350 automatic.
'81 VW Dasher diesel wagon. see above
'80 International Scout Traveller(118" WB) with Nissan 3.3L turbo diesel (engine 850 lbs/101 hp) 20-23 mpg's.
'83 Peugeot 505S Turbo Diesel, 5 spd. manual. Simply the best car I've ever owned. Went 200K mi. with just a head job. 35 mpg alot.
'01 Dodge Cummins. I like it. You just need to watch the fuel pressure, and carry a spare lift pump.
John, I wish you well with your 'new' rig. I'm hoping you'll have a better result than I did.
