Why would you NOT want the latest computer updates on your vehicle. they normally consist of programming code changes to correct a problem that if left undone may create more problems in the long term. I think I would call the dealer and thank him for taking the initiative to do the work without being asked. Vehicles today are not like the old days where you changed the plugs and points every 10,000 miles. todays cars have many many computers built into them and not updating can cause all sorts of problems from stupid things like the rear view mirror not working properly to drivability issues which could cause you to fail emission testing.

I agree that some (probably most) computer updates are necessary and are an improvement in performance and reliability. However, in the case the latest mandatory update on my 2005 PSD, my mileage DECREASED by about 1 MPG in city driving (not sure if highway mileage was affected) and turbo lag time INCREASED.

I can only wonder what other negative issues are going on behind the scenes with my PSD due to the new flash. That being said, I really can't fault the dealership, the flash was mandated by the State of California and/or the Federal Government..... and of course we all know how much they care about our engines. LOL.

See you out there,

What does this do to an add on chip like Edge w/ Attitude...or a Banks power chip? Could a reflash damage these??

It can and most likely does erase them and installs the new (cough, cough) improved programming. Then you are SOL because you then get to pay for another chip, etc.
What do you think your chip or programming does to their program?? It changes it to what the chip maker tells it to.

This is not entirely true. Some of the reflashes are not for any of the perameters that the programmers and such change. The trouble is that on the vehicles that the PCM was actually sent out to tune or replaced with a tuned one will have the tune replaced with the stock tune. At least that is how GM gas trucks are. If they reflash to change the tire size it reflashes everything. I don't know if that is true. Most custom tuners will re-tune for free if you have the documentation that the dealer reflashed it. As far as being upset that can go either way. Even if it is required or a needed flash I believe they should have to disclose any work they plan to do before doing it whether it is free or not. It should be your choice, however if refused then they could denied warranty on anything caused by not having it flashed. The bottom line is IMHO they should tell you if they are going to do any non requested work before performing it.

From what I've read, as long as the engine is still under warranty, they can reflash it without your permission.

At my home away from home a.k.a. the local Chevrolet dealership. We will perform any open recalls when you bring your vehicle in for service. We are actually pressured by the manufacturer to do so. This sometimes includes a reprogram but could address any number of issues. We don't usually do reprogramming just because there is an update unless the customer wants us to do so for a specific complaint. As for the quality of dealership service after 29 years as a technician one thing I've found is that when the job is tough or hard to diag. a lot of independent shops use the easy out. TAKE IT TO THE DEALER!! We hear this often from customers. Not trying to slam all independents, lots of great guys out there!! Just saying in my opinion the dealership guys are better trained on there specific product.

You dont have a choice.

Yes, you do. Someone on another board I frequent went so far as to lock out the connecter (he actually put a padlock on it) so they couldn't reflash the ECM. If I end up putting a Diablosport program in my Magnum, I'll do the same.

I had Dodge put "NO REVERSE WARNING FLASH" on the work order when they replaced my CP3 just in case. Normally they DON'T bother to do the flashes you need and waste time chasing things that are fixed.
