Question,

In our area, whether at a private campground, or a federal/state/county facility, you have to check in. When you check in you get something with the site number and the last day you are paid for written on it. That has to be prominently displayed in the windshield or on the RV. And they check on a regular basis to make sure you are in the right spot and paid for.

Don't they do that in any other areas?

they do. BUT, there are some parks here locally that are broken up into 2-3 sections with only one attendant gate and 2-3 entrances with one for each section. Very easy to park and then register.

Some people don't get it. That happened to us on our 1st Anniversary. Except, the people took our reserved, specially picked out spot (that was paid for). They had already set up camp and were eating when we arrived. Talk about awkward. When we explained it was for our Anniversary and that it was a special spot (and paid for), they said for us to get the Park Warden and they weren't moving. "Pick another spot. There are plenty of them." Sure, there were, but this one cost more due to its waterfront location and being the ONLY waterfront location. What a mess.

Instead of causing a stink, we just moved to another spot - far away - and then spent our day on their beach. LOL.

Some people just don't get it and we're too nice.

Your way to nice. I would take the challenge to get the Ranger

There have been some parks we have been to that we were given a specific spot when checking in.
We have also been to a couple where they told us to find a spot then let them know which one we are at.

So, many years ago I used to go to a pretty busy campground every spring... It usually fills up, and they have a huge overflow area... I usually arrive very late at night or extremely early in the am. So, I get there, find my site in the overflow campground (this was pre-camper days), put a couple of chairs and my son (he was 8 or 9) in the site and ran back to the ranger house to pay... Since it was a little before they opened, I had to wait in line to pay. Well, my turn comes and guess what... Some people just came in, paid site unseen and picked "my" spot. Now, mind you, the overflow is HUUUGE, very open and lots of sites. So, I say well dang, paid for the site next to it and headed back.
What do I find - My son, standing in the road, our chairs tossed over to the other side of road and he is crying. Seems that the guy had a fit, yelled at my son and threw our stuff out of his "paid" site!
I won't say exactly how I handled it, just that they decided to leave early...

The next year, similiar scenario (except arrived at like 5am!)... Of course, now my boy wont stay in the site, so at opening time headed right over to the ranger shack. Well, same thing happened... So, I paid for a different site and again and headed back. Except this time my gear was not disturbed and the other campers were friendly, we talked and they even helped me relocate my stuff to the site we paid for. We had a great time, met some very nice people and even shared a meal. In fact, they were so nice that they even offered to change sites... But, since it was not a problem, and easy for me, I just moved.

We had reservations at Dead Horse SP in Utah on our trip. We arrived later in the evening on the day of our reservation and there was a popup in the site, and no one around. The reservation sign with our name was still on the post. We had been driving all day and I was exhausted so I pulled into an open site that was NOT reserved. The next day they were still there and their car was gone again (or still). There would be no way to get into that site even if I went to the ranger and we were satisfied with the one we pulled into so I didn't raise the issue.

However, that was really inconsiderate of them. I would have been SOL if there were no open sites when we got there. After driving all day I probably would have just pulled in behind the popup and set up for the night!!!

And if by chance you've made reservations at a hotel (I know, I know but sometimes the camper can't go) you've paid for an extra day because you're considerate & know that you're going to be in either very early or very late...and the idiot at the desk gave away your suite. Are you going to sleep 8 people in the double bed room? Sometimes in our quest to be nice & do the right thing, we don't make these other people accountable for what they've done. Move 'em!

Most of the reservations I've made have been for a specific site.

One time we found a car parked on the site we had reserved. I asked the CG Manager if they knew who the car belonged to, they did and contacted the owner who promptly moved it. Unfortunately, the previous camper had never cleaned up after her dog on the site! there were piles of doggie doo all around the fireplace. I asked the Manager about it. He said they would be happy to clean it up or we could have a different site. I said I'd much rather have the prior occupant clean it. The manager smiled and said, "Since I'm never letting her back in here again, that isn't going to work." I borrowed a shovel and happily cleaned the mess up.

On the way out, the manager came up to the car and made a point of telling us we were welcome back any time.

Oh, I know that we let the 'bad guy' win, but it was our anniversary and I didn't want a fight to start it off.

We have that here, and the site number you paid for is also written on it.

That's the way it is out here AND at Dead Horse. In fact, our name was written on the card at the post as well. So, it's not like they could say they didn't know it wasn't their site to take!!!
