So I guess you've never overnighted in a travel center, rest stop or Wal-Mart then texatDurango? How good for you. Being retired may open your schedule up a bit but what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else.
There is nothing wrong with overnighting in a truck stop. These places want your business and providing overnight parking is one of the enticements they offer to get it. Same with Wal-Mart, Cracker Barrel, etc.
The only concern I would have is taking extra spots with slides when the lot is full. If there are plenty of space, slide away.
Putting out a slide isn't even remotely similar to setting out chairs, a mat, your awning, BBQ, etc. The slides are part of the vehicle and in many cases must be extended for the vehicle to be usable.
L&MMusic, one other thing I forgot to mention is leaving your running lights on if you're concerned about being seen. It makes the rig much more visible.

You did nothing wrong...30 open spots and you took up a couple of them and the 30 spots never got filled.
Whether we choose to park in an RV park or choose to park in a Walmart, Flying J, etc. that is our own decision and no reason to attack someone who doesn't do like you do...
I carry four collapsible 18" traffic cones, complete with reflective tape. Cost about $7 each at Tractor Supply Co. If I have the slightest concern about someone coming too close to me at night, I put them out where they can warn someone not to get too close.
They also can double as roadside warning devices in the event of a flat or a break down.

Reading all the threads I think the conclusion would be if you only took one space (no problem)but taking up more than one spot (unacceptable) 30 spaces or not. Does not take long for those to fill up. As far as planning, we always plan on getting to our destination (campground) before dark. Planning and getting somewhere late at night and worrying about disturbing campers then stop a few hours earlier then no worries.
If I was a trucker I would be ticked off also if someone took up more than one space regardless of how many open spaces How do people feel when someone parks a car in two spaces?
I also get a kick out of people that chime in and say something to the effect of x amount of pages of ranting, here we go again etc. In case you do not know this is a discussion forum, positive and negative feedback lead to the discussion. Happy Camping

We stayed at the Flying J in Evansville, IN. They had quite a few RV spots out in the front lot. The truck spots were in the larger lot in the back. A very well designed Flying J.
To the OP I would only put the slide out if I were on the edge of the lot and the slide went over the grass. Maybe open the sofa and sleep there.

The Flying J in Evansville IN encourages RVs to spend the night. They have RV parking that is seperate from the truckers and the girl I asked at the counter said her parents come through regularly on vacation and stop overnight with their RV.

Mike, You are correct in assuming I have never spent the night in a parking lot of any kind... even when I was working so being retired has nothing to do with anything. Having a free night on the road is NOT the issue here, it's common courtesy, plain and simple! To remind you of what was said in the original post, here is what caught my eye and to me is what the issue is here.... "we take up two parking spaces. And, actually, our bedroom slide is right on the edge of a third spot."
Regardless whether the lot had 30+ spaces open at 10 or 11 PM is meaningless, I have seen these places fill up at three in the morning. Truckers aren't like the average RV'er, they drive when they can even if it means the wee hours of the morning and to make a judgement on lane availability at 11 PM is poor judgement in my opinion.
The idea of KNOWINGLY taking up two full slots, and possibly a third is what I took acception to.

This is armchair arguing nonsense! Letting out the slides is the same as letting out an awning or sitting out a grill if it encroaches on another parking lane.
