I don't know of anyplace where a shotgun is illegal, except some parks.
A "coach gun" (a side-by-side double with 20 inch barrels) is very handy, as is a "trench gun" (a slide action repeater with a 20 inch barrel).
"Light loads" (trap or target) with small shot are readily available.
Yes, a 20 inch barrel is legal, the minimum is 18 inches. Some places require that a full stock be on the trench gun. The pistol grip stock may not be legal in those areas. A coach gun may also be available with the pistol grip stock, which might not be legal.
There is something about the sound of a round being chambered in a slide action shotgun that makes the most hardened criminal wish he was somewhere else.

Almost sounds like Germany 1936, strong arm tactics of the gun control group has done little to reduce crime and a lot to disarm the American people. I guess that is why we need a National law.

We've never felt unsafe in any place we've stayed, either in Canada or the US. Whatever you decide, just do not try to enter Canada with anything more threatening than a baseball bat.

Funny we had this conversation with some friends we camped with this weekend.
One was pretty much pro gun one was pretty much anti gun and me. We talked and debated for a few min and pretty much all agreed ,other than the law, don't ask don't tell makes the most sence.
I don't think any of us on the fourm plan on wearing a side arm around the campground or having a long gun on the picknic table so people can see why that we are prepared for trouble. I don't see anything wrong with people being prepared to defend themselves but I don't see the need to advertise it.
It would be in each of our best interest to know the laws of where we go. We should also know them in the case we see someone else doing something they are or are not allowed to.

Hi Rick,
On our last trip to Canada, we were going to Keno City in the Yukon on a 4-wheeling trip, we entered Canada at Boundary on the Top Of The World Highway. The Canadian Customs officer asked me if we had any guns. When I said no she asked me what I was going to use for bear protection. Apparently she thought we needed one. As I understand it we could have had a rifle or shotgun with a barrel length of at least 19 inches and an overall length of at least 26 inches.

Chuck,
That may be so. I'm a firefighter, not a Border Agent and long guns may be fine, but every year some poor US vacationer tries to get in with a handgun stashed in their unit and gets caught. They lose the weapon, get a huge fine and are most likely denied entry. All I can tell you is the rules seem to get tighter every year and forewarned is forearmed (no pun intended).

You could give up UR guns and let the law protect U as many would advocate but then again I don't plan on doing that. Just a few days ago the law broke in on a town mayor and killed his dogs. They said they had a no knock warrant but it took 3 days to get them to show it and they didn't even know it was the town mayor's home they raided-so how is it that they had a warrant 1st. Having a gun might mean I'd be shot-like the law did to a 95 yo woman in Atlanta-but I don't plan on depending on them for protection. No one will know I have it unless I do need it and my local sheriff told me that my rv was an extension of my home so it was ok for me to have one.

Personally I don't carry anything I don't want used against me.
It may just be my ignorance, but I haven't really heard many stories about people being "home invaded" while in their RV... If I'm in a dodgy area and need to stop for the night I simply keep going for a couple of miles, and that usually solves the problem.

there is a gun law book avalable on line that covers all fifty states it is a must for travelers hand guns can be a problem the best bet is a shotgun there is a site called cheaper than dirt that sells shotgun shells that shoot a 1 inch rubber ball at 900 feet per second that will stop anyone and they are non deadly so they can be used in states that are against self defense it is sad to think of things like this when rving but stuff happens last summer there was a couple out west camping in a walmart when there fifth wheel was broken into in the middle of the night by 2 men armed men what they didnt know was the owner was ready and shot the first guy.

There are always going to be stories and events that hit the news and gossip circuit that always gives us a reason for doing anything. I would bet most are not true or streched.
I just gotta ask...why in the world would we have a hobby/lifestyle that we are so concerend about being attacked and still keep doing it.
I bet the number of actual problems would almost be nil....
