Hi, I am in the process of buying a Holiday Rambler Alumascape 31 CKS to fulltime in, and I want to add a 50” or so HDTV. I don’t have a clue as to where I will put it, I just know that I HAVE to have one. Ha! Ha! I think that it would be best on a table with rollers so that it could be moved. That way, it could be seen no matter where I was sitting. This would be a “special” table made just for the TV with a frame built around the TV so that it couldn’t fall off/over. Of course, the table would have to be secured while towing.
A problem with a table is that I don’t want it any wider than necessary when the TV is not in use. That way, it won’t take as much room. I have thought about having a narrow table with the rollers that slid in/out. Example: 12” sliders on each side/end. If the table is 12” wide, then the sliders would go out to give a base of almost 36” for stability. When not in use, the table could be secured without the sliders being out.
Looking for comments/suggestions from others who have added or thought about adding a large screen HDTV. Also, feel free to comment on my suggestion.

I saw it done on a diesel pusher that had two couches. He took the couch out on the pass. side and built a desk in its place. He had the Tv on a motorized lift that came up out of the back of the desk. It looked real good and he had his 50" TV. It also got rid of the head knocker TV in the front.

That's a lot better idea than trying to mount it on a wall. A 50" flat screen is a lot of weight, if the wall was built to hold the tv it would be one thing. If you are trying to add it on to a wall built as light as an rv wall I don't think you would make many trips before you found it on the floor.

DH always told our kids that we needed a bigger flat screen. So we bought the Suite because of the Sony 42" Plasma. New 2009 Suites are getting up to 40" LCD on a lift. Not sure if I like the lift. Just another gizzmo to go bad.

Not trying to be critical, but maybe you should somehow arrange to test a 50" TV in your unit before investing the money. Seems to me that this would overpower (sizewise) the space. We have a 32" in our fiver with 2 slides in LR and would not want any larger. JMHO.

We're watching the Olympics on a modest size 78" front projector screen in our stick house.
If you can control the viewing environment a front projector can be had for $1500 that will give you 100". A power screen would make it slick and compact. The option of outdoor viewing can be a lot of fun as well if you've got a lot of friends.

No wonder people laugh at RVers. Start at the beginning of this and read what all of you wrote. A bit over the top, don't you think?

A bit over the top, perhaps for some, but not for me. The larger the screen the better. I love watching TV/movies, and as I told my son, I might be "Trailer Trash", but I am going to have a first class home (trailer) theater system.
I don't have a wall space to mount even if I could. I could take out the dinette or the sofa or the two recliners to build an entertainment center, BUT I wouldn't have a straight line of sight to the TV without twisting/turning. Personally, I like to sit/recline with the TV directly in front of me.
The only way to do this, is to set the TV on a table that can be moved. That way, it can be stored out of the way (or as much out of the way as possible), and still be moved for viewing from the recliners or sofa.
This table would have shelves below the TV for other electronics. One problem with a moving table is the wires/cables laying on the floor. I will have to figure out a way for them to lay flatly/smoothly so they won't be a trip hazard.
Thanks for the comments/suggestions.

I would suggest measuring the distance between where you think you would mount the TV and where you would be sitting.
Then I would go to a TV showroom and look at a 50" screen from that distance. Spend some time doing it and see if you are comfortable watching from that distance.
According to this website
Recommended Viewing Distances
for a 50" screen you should be 12.5 feet away. That's a lot of open space to find inside an RV.
We recently upgraded the old Sony Trinitron CRT units in our coach.
Our viewing distance is about 8 feet. The recommended size for that distance is 32-37 inches. Like you I of course wanted something bigger.
But after going to a showroom and looking at the different sizes, we ending up buying a 32", not even the 37".
I'm really glad we did not get a larger screen. It would have been like sitting in the front row at the movies.
