Hey folks-

I am heading up to BC, Canada for Ironman Canada, a triathlon in Penticton BC. I am looking for any recommendations on campgrounds or boondocking sites in south central BC, especially any that are above 10000 feet- I need to maintain my altitude adaptation. I have a campground reservation for the race itself, but I will be in the area, or south in Idaho, for several days beforehand.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks all!

I don't think you're going to find any campgrounds at that altitude in BC, but check here anyway:

I was thinking that was the case, unfortunately.

I am trying to avoid staying in Colorado at altitude and making a fast dash for Penticton a day or so before the race.

Ghost:

It's pretty brutal above 10,000 feet in BC (or, anywhere north of the 45th! Even in August).

I think your only possibility may be Glacier NP, tent site (fairly close to 10,000 ft at Roger's Pass I think?)...

Perhaps your competition is in the same boat as you? Having to drop below acclimatization, then re acclimatize??? What's the prize anyway? Several $ million ?

Good luck,

Sorry no advice, but good luck!

I'm a competitive cyclist myself and have several friends who are Ironman competitors. I don't know anyone doing Penticton however.

Good luck!!

The prize is the satisfaction of having done a decent job. I only compete with myself- I'm too slow to compete with anyone else...

Kentucky Allenyne campsite is pretty close to Penticton, but only around 3400 feet. It's only about three hours or less to there from there.

Beware of the flies though. We were there last year for three days, and little deer flies almost killed us. DW was so swollen up from bites...

Install Google Earth and look at the elevation pointer down at the bottom. You can follow roads along and find campsite elevations that way.

Yes,

On your way from Denver, go to Big Horn Federal Park in North Central Wyoming; Hwy 14/144. I believe there are some spots at the summit above 10,000 SF. What a georgus drive; absolutely beautiful. I've let the cat out of the bag with this one. You won't see many other RV's there besides TC's. We went with a friend who had a class A; he had to keep it floored in 1st gear to get up and over averaging 20 mph. Check your brakes before coming down. It's steep, winding and the vista's are spectacular, but easily done with a Truck Camper.

I believe you have to register ahead of time to use it. Here is a link for it: Big Horn

If you go and find it to be everything I said it would be please let me know. Good luck with the triathalon; I'm nursing tendonitis.

Mustang Ricky

Glad to be on top of the dirt!!
