Has anyone been viewing bears at Hyder in the past few days. We are in Whitehorse and headed toward Hyder in a day or two. We were wondering if the salmon and bears are plentiful?

thanks for your comments.

We were in Hyder on July 22. We saw one bear and the salmon were not plentiful.

We are at Hyder now. There are virtually no salmon although we were at the viewing platform for just about a hour last evening after we arrived and had a black bear come down, eat some berries and leaves as he walked up stream, and jump in the water before leaving the way he came. Right now it is raining too hard to comfortably go out to the platform. The rangers at the platform hope the rain will bring the salmon in. We will be here two more days and hope the weather and the bear viewing improves. We did see a black bear on the road on the way into Stewart.

We were there last weekend. There were a few salmon, but the river was not packed with them. We saw two black bears--neither caught a salmon and a grizzly that caught three salmon. The best times for viewing tended to be 6-10 both morning and night. Mornings tend to be less crowded. We also saw two black bears up by Salmon Glacier and one on the Cassier Hwy. The trip up to the glacier was spectacular and well worth the trip. If it clears up I would highly recommend it.

Update on Hyder. The rain last night and this morning have brought in more salmon and with it the bears. We were at the viewing platform for about 5 1/2 hours this afternoon and evening and saw five different bears and they were fishing. We are hoping this improvement will continue as we are here for two more days. If the weather improves we will try to go to the glacier but right now it is very overcast, foggy and the clouds are hanging very low. More rain is predicted.
