Is there a safe/non toxic water tank treatment to flush it out/ prevent bacteria growth?? Our 5th wheel we bought was sitting along time and needs a good flush before we can use the water. Thanks!

Fill the tank with water and about six ounces of purex. Let that set overnight and then flush the tank two or three times with fresh water. If there is a built-in sink filter I would also suggest replacing the filter.

Indeed, the Purex, or chlorine, method above is good. Don't forget to run the faucets in the RV until you smell the chlorine. You need to clean out the water lines as well as the fresh water tank.

If you use the bleach to sanitize the tanks and fill and drain a couple of times please use the water you drain to water trees, shrubs, and grass. Many people say 1/4 cup of bleach to 16 gallons of water. Fill 3/4 full and drive around to loosen any thing stuck to the tank.

If the smell/taste of bleach remains just refill tank and add a cup of vinegar midway through the tank fill up, let it sit for an hour or so and then run it through the lines then drain the rest. It'll neutralize the bleach.

my sink filter came with a plate to put over it when sanitizing/winterizing it. Of course I have never replaced the plate with the original filter yet.

Actually the industry standard is 1/4 cup of bleach to every 10 gallons of water to properly sanitize your tank - and that is the instructions given with my 2008 fifth wheel.

As said above, use the pump to pull the clorinated water through all water lines. Let sit overnight. Flush as least 2 times.

Most of the "industry standard" instructions give a ratio of 1/4 cup per 15 gallons. Frankly if your tank is, say, 60 gallons it really doesn't matter much whether you put in one cup or 1.5. But be sure to use basic plain chlorine bleach, not any of the fancy newfangled "scented" versions.

Remember when you're "flushing" the tank, that you only need to rinse the surface of it, and the plumbing itself. There's no need to actually fill the tank up, just put in a few gallons of fresh water and drive around the block or even back and forth a couple of times in the driveway to slosh the fresh water over the whole surface of the tank. Saves a lot of time and water.

And rinsing also depends on exactly how your tanks are set up. I've found it's useful to leave the drain open for a minute when I start refilling, to flush out the last of the bleachwater solution before I refill.

Put 1/2 cup of Clorox in the freshwater tank and then fill the tank. Run the water through all of the faucets until you can smell bleach. Let the entire system sit for a day and then empty the tank and lines. Fill the freshwater tank again and then run water throught he lines until you can't smell bleach. Good luck!
