More layoffs expected at Newmar
By Greg Gerber @ 5:08 PM :: :: 0 Comments :: [Article Rating] :: Manufacturing News [Click to print]
NAPPANEE, Ind. — Another round of layoffs is on the way for workers at Newmar RV in Nappanee.
The company says they'll lay off a small number of remaining employees on Wednesday.
In February, they laid off nearly 120 workers — about 13 percent of their workforce.
Last month, they laid off another 20 percent, about 160 people. That only leaves about 630 of the original 900 workers.
The company says high gas prices and a sluggish economy are to blame.

Hopefully Newmar is just adjusting production to the market. They build a quality product, hopefully prepared financially for a rainy day. I think other rv companies may be much nearer the edge, companies that produce mass quantities of low quality trailers for the occasional campers.

Even with a 'quality product' if they cannot generate enough cash to meet their covenants or show a viable business plan for borrowing they could be in deep doo doo.

Newmar at this time has no plans on closing at all.
They plan to be around a long time.
I just recieved some price quotes on some work that they may do for us.
Newmar will be closed for the week of the 18th. They will work on a on order basis.
Remember they have been around sice the 1960's. They are a very well established company.
In short they are making some smart moves to stay around for the long haul.

I also just received a quote of some service work to be done at the factory. They are quite busy with maintenance and service work but since they only build new on a order by order basis and from my knowledge operate as a cash/no credit line business they can downsize or even temporarily postpone production when orders are few and far between to control production costs. This is why and how they can shut down for a week or two here and there to build order inventory to allow them to open for a production run when numbers make busness sense. I too think we'll see them in for the long haul.

That's exactly the same scenario with Travel Supreme just prior to them closing for a "few days" in their announcement AFTER workers showed up Monday morning to find locked gates and unshipped inventory along with customers rigs on the wrong side of the fence. They were still processing dealers orders the Friday prior. Subsequent announcements extended the time interval by a couple of weeks while they did some financial restructuring but we all know how that ended up now.
The major difference seems to be the mulitple lay-offs that Newmar is having would indicate they are not hiding anything but rather making every attempt to deal with the lower sales in the U.S.A.

Travel Supreme was a much smaller company then Newmar and was started by people that use to work at Newmar.
I spent some time at the Travel Supreme factory looking at their manufacturing lines.
I do admit that I was surprised to see them close so quickly. That could happen to any company of any size. Lets pray that Newmar has made the right decisions to hang in their.
I wonder how some of these newer companies are doing that just started up in recent times.

Pilgrim International closed last friday. Even their web site has disappeared. They had a rally In Indiana in July, factory tours, BBQ's the works, showed their new composite line, then poof-not even a month, gone! Our 5th is one yr old and we had warranty work done in April with our dealer. Really minor things we could have done ourselves, but heck, warranty covered it. Al least all the components like fridge, stove etc have their own warranties. guess we'll just take good care of it and enjoy it. I feel for all the employees and their families. I'm sure some have been with these companies a long time. Hoping the economy gets better. Dona

I just went to the Pilgrim International web site at http://www.pilgrimintl.com/. I also called their factory and got voice mail. Where did you get your information that they closed?
