Here, too.
We call the automated line for two papers, stop it the day we leave, start it back the day we get home...no problem whatsoever.
We have our missed papers credited to our bill. I used to try to read them all when we got home--too much pressure!

When I was in the service, my dad subscribed to the home paper and had it mailed to me. I would sometimes get 5-6 papers at a time. I already knew most of the national news--so I caught up on the local stuff and sports.
That was a lot of reading to catch up on.

We stop and start ours both in MD and in FL with some regularity. No problems. In FL the automated system recognizes our phone number and takes it from there! Go figure.

We have no problem here or in Florida. Call, use the automated system, and they stop when you say. You key in the restart date and then, they start back up.

Both our papers have vacation stop options on their webpage and they haven't blown a stop or restart date yet. Of course, we slip the delivery guy an envelope at Christmas and that might help a bit. We've had the same guy delivering papers since we moved into this place 15 years ago.

The newspaper I get has both a website and automated phone line to stop paper delivery for vacations.
I use the web and it works every time.

As a ex car route carrier who delivered over 600 papers a night I can say that the above answer was the best. Most adult carriers these days are independent contractors and should be contacted personally instead. The best bet would have been too get a message to the carrier or to get the carriers number directly.

Racefan has a good idea. And, since more and more papers have contracted out the entire delivery operation, there's not an employee overseeing the carrier force. With less expense comes less control. I still work for a paper that has employee managers overseeing adult contractors, but the writing is on the wall.

KeninAZ wrote: I had the same problem with mail
Then it dawned on me that if I removed the mail box from the curb they couldn't deliver it until I got back.
That worked.
Nothing, I repeat nothing, even our request would stop my PO from delivering the mail. (Even if I did not want it)
Now this is someone on the ball!

We had same problem with stopping our newspaper. Also when we are home we only get the paper half the time, remaining time it was left in the road with cars running over it, thrown in the ditch, and etc. After repeated calls, we canceled the paper 2 years ago. Our carrier had changed and she was one snotty woman. I hated calling her to have a vacation hold and it never worked anyway. Have tried doing it with main number and on line and still was delivered on vacation stop.
