hey all,

my family and i are trying to go full time for a year or so. we currently own a house in CA that we can't sell. so we're going to rent it out. i have been looking into becoming a resident of another state, preferably one without state income tax since i will be working remotely while in the RV and would enjoy a few extra bucks a month. Also my toad is a modified syncro vanagon that i cannot SMOG in CA (we were trying to sell and move to HI when i modded it), it's not a polluter, it actually runs cleaner than stock. it just illegal in the grand republik of CA since it no longer has it's stock motor. so if i can reg it in another state i'll be set.

so, any downsides to NV? i'd prefer a state that borders CA, and i like NV since we can always just go to Tahoe to take care of any issues.

also, what are the basic steps i need to take to "move" to NV?

thanks!
andrew

Nevada is the only state that borders CA which has no income tax. There is at least one mail forwarding service for RV folks located in Henderson, a suburb of Las Vegas.

You will still have a tax liability in CA from the rent that is paid for your house there.

cool, thanks. yeah i figured having the house would incur some taxes as well, but no state income tax will save me about as much as my RV payment so it would be worth it for sure.

You had better check on the Nevada registration fees for your unit. If it is a newer rig you may find that the income tax savings is lost to the registration fees.

I think they smog in Las Vegas area? I live in Minden and no smog. I checked with Mail Boxes in (I think it is UPS store now) and they would forward. I thought at the time it was expensive.

yes i was worried about that. we actually haven't bought it yet and wondered if i should move to NV first to avoid paying twice. i doubt the dealer will let me take it unreg'ed. i thought some interstate transfers don't make you double pay for the annual reg. like if you had a sept 09' sticker in one state and moved in dec 08' they would give you the same date and not charge you for the 09 reg. i could be making that completely up.

as for smog, it's not the same. my van will have no problems in any of the 49 states. CA SMOG is not about emission output, or i'd have no problems, it's about having a stock motor. i have a mostly stock motor, but it's from a 02 ford focus not from any 87 vanagon. it runs 4x cleaner, but it won't pass in CA because it's not original equipment. stupid but true.

It's much easier to register a vehicle in SD than anywhere I've ever lived and that is 9 states. We are former residents of NV and I would not recommend registering a vehicle there, very expensive. When we sold our house and no longer had a physical address, our insurance canceled us. We filled out the paperwork from California, signed us with a mail forwarding service and registered our vehicles. A year later we got our driver's license when we passed through our "home state" for the first time.

I was very suprised at how high the fee's are in NV. I use S.D. also.
I have address's in both states. Don't quite know how to handle that when I sell the hse in NV. Don't want to go to SD for drivers lic.

Where you set up residence in Nevada can make a big difference in vehicle registration. Avoid Washoe (Reno) and Clark (Las Vegas) counties.

Since Nevada is such a low cost and easy state for business, it has a lot of resident agent firms that also deal with mail forwarding and other 'presence' issues.

I suppose this is a silly question, however, If you are going to live and do your work out of your rv, why in the world would you choose any state over the big three Tx, SD, Fla ?
