Currently my husband and I own a 30'TT with our tow vehicle being a Suburban. We had thought someday we would like to transition over to a fifth wheel but with the current fuel prices thought we would try a motor home. Currently we get around 8 miles to the gallon using the Suburban but the bad thing is is that when we arrive at our destination we still have to drive this gas hog everywhere we go!! We thought if go to a motor home and tow our saturn we would be ahead with the cost of fuel when we travel.

Now this is where I would LOVE all of your help.

I have NO CLUE about motor homes!! We are in our 40's with younger kids still so we will not be full timers. We cannot afford those big luxury liners that we see pull in beside us sometimes. We would like something not large but with 1 or 2 slides that would make a smaller rig seem roomier. Can anyone suggest to us which ones would good for us to look into. Right now we would probably only be able to afford an older model. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

God Bless and Happy Camping!!!

Check out dealers in your area. See what they have and check the different floorplans.Good luck

Start by looking on line, then in person to see what YOU like.
Here is a good website-- a very large consignment lot:

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/used_rvs_for_sale.htm

Just click on the type of motorhome you may be interested in: Diesel (Class A), (Gasoline) Class A, Class B/C.

As you narrow down your search, you will be able to ask more specific questions.

With just a broad question, you are likely to get a lot of "my coach is great" answers. And while true, it may not be a great coach for you and your family.

Is there anywhere I can go also to find out what the differences are for the above??

This is going to be tough to answer because its kind of open ended.

But my contribution to the answer is for you to ask for the maintenance records for whatever you buy.

Also check the cargo carrying capacity and the towing capacity of your selection.

The more slides, the more room, but the more potential for maintenance costs. And each slide lowers the CCC of the rig.

Winnebago has built RVs for fifty years and has a good reputation. We have had good luck with our rig.

I would start by determining your budget and than spend many many many weekends at RV dealers until you find what you like.
we are in the same boat than you and we are now looking for 14 month. But as it seems out seach may be comming to an end because it sees like we found our MH 2 weeks ago.

good luck

Really the best answer is to click on each type and see what might fit your needs, both in terms of budget and layout.

Well, I'll jump in and try to clarify the alphabet: Class A is the big motorhome that looks like a bus. Class C is a typically smaller motorhome built on a small truck chassis which retains the cab of the truck. It typically has an overhang over the cab. Class B is the smallest, a van conversion. When we were shopping we looked at replacements for the very small Class C we had, but ultimately decided on a Class A because I was tired of climbing up into the over cab bed. The best bet is for you to look at a variety of Class C and Class A layouts and decide what is best for you. Our Class C was wonderful when we had small kids because it had bunk beds for them, something you almost never see in a Class A. The Class A will typically have more room, more slides, and more storage than the Class C, at the expense of a bigger price tag. Good luck in your search.

Looks like your thoughts are in the right direction with the motorhome and towing a toad that gets high MPG. I would suggest a used gas class A 2000 year or newer as you can afford. There's some very good nice ones out there for under $50k. I would say check out the ones on the dealers lots, drive several, sort of find the length and floor plan you like. Keep a log of every thing you look at and drive, along with the miles on the unit and the asking price. Then when your ready search the private sector. I'm not saying the dealers are not honest, but who knows more about their motorhome than the person that owns it. People trade them in and the dealer only knows what the owners have told them and then they forget. Learn what to ask and write down what your told. Believe me after looking at 2 or 3 RV's in a day or two you can't remember what story went with what RV.

You are starting off right by getting information here. We kind of jumped in without a lot of knowledge. The things I wished we had done are - look and look then look at some more. Go to all the RV shows you can and ask questions. Don't get hooked on one that looks pretty. Check very carefully for delamination, the skin looks like it is separated from the body, it can be little or small. If you see any sign of water damage run away!!!! Don't be afraid to make a reasonable offer and always be willing to walk away, there are plenty out there. Good luck!
