Recently while climbing some long, steep grades in Virginia, my ford chassis motor home (see signature) would begin making a loud whining sound. The transmission was not downshifting as the RPM did not increase. Once the steep grade leveled off, the whine would quit - transmission remaining in same gear for a while.

Since it only happened during hard climbs, it seems normal but I'm wondering what is going on mechanically.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it is not the cooling fan clutch engaging?

They do make a lot of noise.

Wolfe10 may well be right on. I thought I was having tranny problems because of that same sound. Turns out it was the fan clutch going bad.

Check the transmission fluid to make sure it is ok. If no hesitation or jerking it may very well be the fan clutch kicking in.

When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?

It could also well be the fan.

Yep the fan on the v10 has more blades and when the clutch engages sounds more like a turbine spooling up

Be sure to check the fluid. If it is dark or smells of burnt oder it needs replacement.

Mine also. Scared the $%#$ out of me the first time it took off.

Never hurts to change the fluid though when in doubt.

If it quiets down on flat ground it is more than likely the cooling fans in the tranny. Just got back from Yellowstone last month and I thought my tranny was screaming at me....called my dealer and he said it is the cooling fans on the clutch - after returning to normal travel all was quiet.

I did check the levels though just to make sure the fluids were okay.
