We're going back to Q and Yuma area this winter but planning to stay much longer. We have a very prey-driven dog who is determined to stick her nose down every hole she finds. Didn't give it a thought much last year as snakes and scorpians are hiberating.
Just when do they start to surface? March? April?

Believe it or not, check with your vet for a rattlesnake vaccine for dogs. A vaccination costs around $20.00, whereas a complete rattlesnake emergency bite treatment runs an average of $600.00 to $1500.00! And the dog can still lose a leg or worse! There are also "snake proofing" training for dogs that will teach it quickly to avoid rattlesnakes completely using scent and safe, humane shock training. Check into it!

I have lived in AZ for the last 22 years and can count on one hand how many rattle snakes I have seen, and I go to remote locations often(but I don't stick my nose in holes lol).Scorpions however I see a lot of,dont think they would kill a dog though. But someone may have another story for you.Have had dogs out here the whole time never had one bitten yet.

I second this reply. Our dogs are vaccinated for snake bite because of their possible exposure in south Texas on the ranch and the high cost for treatment of non-vaccinated dogs. Yes they will bite dogs and I have seen dogs killed by rattlers.

Yes you do................after the fact. LOL.
I spend a lot of time out in the desert and rock trails, and I see snakes all the time, even here in Idaho during the summer. Of course those that live in the towns probably will never see one, unless they know where to look, like their dog does.
