Microsoft released SP2 for Office 2008 today. Here's a link:SP2.
Performance is FINALLY much improved. Office opens much faster...about as fast as iWork does. Reading the release notes, it appears MS has fixed a lot of what has been a very buggy program.
It's not all good news, the update process was a living hell. I had to modify the installer because it could not find a copy of Office on my computer. Next, Setup Assistant would run every time I tried to open any Office program. It would not let the program run. Erasing 2 preference files took care of that.
Office 2008 is the ONLY program on my Macs that gives me so much trouble. The iWork updates are quick and easy.

Thanks for the news. I'm downloading now I'll follow up later with details on how the install went.
The problem I've been having is Excel running extremely slow for any charting that involves more than say, 50 values. This cascades into Word because when you paste a chart in and preserve the link to Excel it wants to totally reprocess the chart anytime it is visible on screen.

Well so far everything looks great. The download was 159MB and took about 3 min, the install takes about 5. I got lucky and didn't run into the problems JasonD did. And the apps definitely start faster. It will be interesting to see how fast Entourage starts from a full reboot because before the update it took a long time.
