Open outlook express, go to tools and then to rules, check and see if someone perhaps wrote a message rule that is causing the problem. Had someone here at work write a message rule that they were going to be on vacation for a week and it was supposed to send back automatically to anyone that sent an email to her. Can't explain what happened but it was sending the email out to everyone and it was then bouncing back to us and the process kept repeating itself until we had over 10,000 emails in the box as "undelivered". Just a thought!!
Good luck

PLEASE do a full scan of your computer.. You say that the messages have the same subject, mail delivery failure... This suggests to me that you likely have E-mailed me, and about 10,000 others, with some blather such as how I can make money fast by violating some minor laws or how someone has some funds to dispose of or some such.. In short I strongly suspect your computer is now a SPAM BOT.

(You can look at one of those messages if you can do it carefully)

Do a full mal-ware scan Adware, Spybot Anti-Virus

I suspect you will find one (or more) bits of very much unwanted software on your system.

NOTE: if you can identify who put it there.. Or rather who is responsible (Can be done in some cases) Feel free to sue the bits off 'em.

That happened to someone with whom I had a business email relationship; they went on vacation but left their computer on at home, and something in one of their programs went haywire & started emailing all of their business contacts over and over and over. It was AWFUL!

The problem may be on your computer, or it may be with your email server. Or someone is using your email address to send spam. Good luck getting the problem fixed - it may take several days.

My spam folder is now up to about 40,000 messages and my normal inbox is getting about 200 messages per hour.

I use gmail and outlook express.

I'll try some of the above suggestions and hope for the best.

Thank you all.

I would guess you computer is a bot and forwarding junk mail through your computer and your email program to random addresses thus all the not deliverable!!!! PLEASE get off the net now( pull the cord turn off the router and at least sweep your computer ... Better yet save your data photos letters good email and WIPE your drive and start over!! thats the only way to be sure your not infected!! If you are a bot thousands of people are being spammed now through you and your internet connection ... put a stop to it.

OP stated he had thousands of INCOMING spam.

Correct, but they are mostly message delivery failure notifications. That implies that either:
  • the OP's computer is a zombie sending out a lot of spam, some of which is bouncing back as undeliveriable (possible)
  • or someone else is sending out a lot of spam using the OP's address as a forged sender/reply address, and again, some of them are bouncing back as undeliverable. (more likley, I think)
The key is that they are message delivery failure notifications, and not your garden variety spam. That implies one of the two above scenarios. (A third option is that the OP is intentionally sending out lots of spam, but if that were the case the bounced messages would be expected and he wouldn't be posting here about it! )

It's called joe-jobbing, and spam is being sent out by somebody using your email address as the return.

Hosting exchange and MDaemon servers I see this a lot..

Its a two fold issue. Serena is correct "SOME" are viruses waiting for you to open but that is less than 10% of those returned emails you never sent.

The other 90% is spammer spoofing (faking) OPs email as the return address. You'll get tons of them for 24/48 hours then it will taper off even stop.

Shape shifter nailed it!

Serena again your correct too as some worms are using same trick but majority of them are spoofed emails bouncing back to OP. Why best to just delete them all and ignore. Dont panic! For peace of mind can go to trendmicro's house call online (google it) and do free online scan for all pests.

If that's the case, then it isn't spam at all, is it? I just took the guy at his word. OP - spam is unsolicited commercial email. Bounce notices are bounce notices. Not the same thing, even if there's some donkey butt providing you with both.

You can save off one of those messages as plain text, then look at the header on it. That will usually tell the tale as far as what happened.

Hate this kind of stuff. Haven't used Outlook in a long time now because of it. Used to write custom enterprise stuff for Outlook and Exchange - heh! If I ever see a copy of Exchange Server again, it'll be too soon. Anyway, scan your box. Your ISP can help with the rest.
They're used to it.
