Brilliant college age kid about 5 house down from me was trying to sell a 2007 four wheeler on craigslist. Someone emailed him from out of state and agreed to purchase it plus add shipping cost to the MO. This kid get's the check and deposited it to make sure it would clear. I assume the kid lives under a rock in the backyard. In the meantime, the out of state buyer emails him again and ask where the ATV is, what hours the kid works, when he is home, etc. Needless to say, right before he found out the MO was no good, someone came to his house and stole it! I actually believe I saw the people doing a drive thru to scope the ATV one afternoon. I noticed a strange car in the hood and they were doing their best to avoid me, the popo. Since they were behind me, no tag info. And to make matters worse, the kids mother called in a local news channel to tell the story of this amazing theft!
Here is the proof.

All you have to do to find out what kind of people frequent craigslist is to click on "the best of craigslist" on their menu.

I made the mistake of advertising a guitar on there once. That will not happen again. Everything I have I don't need now goes to Goodwill.

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

I was really surprised when I bought a trailer off Craigslist. She accepted my $800 personal check without any questioning. I was more than happy to get a money order from her bank of choice and have it checked by her for accuracy first.

Thanks guys! I’m not giving up hope on CL because I know the good folks far outweigh the bad, just happened to find a really bad seller on one of those nutty days when everything you touch seems to break

The safety end of it is important. One thing that I don’t particularly like doing is having strangers come by the house, but for selling large items it’s really the only practical way. One of the no-shows has our address and after that I would only give out a close intersection until they were ready to leave. Problem is I never heard back from a couple of them on the day they wanted to come.

After reading Trafficmakers’s post I think I’ll start meeting folks at a store up the road as an added step.

The item wasn’t listed on CL but I had a guy accept a 20k “temporary” check from an account we never needed checks for last year. We were talking for days before I made the two hour drive to see it though and offered to run to the bank and get a certified check.

He didn’t seem worried in the least, that really surprised me.

Don,

I sold my antique/vintage 1976 Honda 4-cylinder motorcycle on Craigslist that I bought last year, for $1,080.00 more than I paid for it, before freight costs. All cash of course. It took a while, but persistence paid off.

I have a sweet tender nature, however I enjoy sharing my thoughts and opinions.

I have some towing mirrors listed free on Craig's List, and have had several people say they were coming by to get them and never showed up. Also have a flat bed trailer listed for sale and same thing. No shows. Do they think I have unlimited time to wait for them? How rude of them.

I've bought and sold a few things via craigslist and it hasn't been any problem. I may be looking for a small boat--but I'm going to wait until winter when a lot of folks are looking to get rid of them before the next season.

I sold my Ford Ranger about 2 hours after I put it on craigslist. It was really clean, and the guy peeled off the 26 Benjamins I was asking for it without a hassle.

I have a couple of exercise machines that are being used as clothes hangers that may soon be listed there as well.
