I ran a vinyl coated thick aircraft cable thru the waytubes on my PullRite SuperGlide and a couple of hefty padlocks to the in bed tie down rings. It'll slow them down! With the pins I replaced the retainer clips with stainless steel cotterpins, bent at the end, you'd need strong pliers to remove them...again to slow the ruffians down!

On my HiJacker manual sliding hitch, I lock the hitch head to the base. The total assembly weighs about 240 pounds. The hitch is now over 7 years old and has some rust spots. If anyone can lift that brute out of the truck, they would have to want it really badly.

I drilled out the pins and put locks thru them NOT to keep the hitch but so some fool doesn't take the pins when I travel. When in storage, I lock the hitch on the trailer pin and so far no one has sawed the pin off to take the hitch.

I thought so too until my wife's co-worker had their hitch stolen out of their truck in a local restaurant parking lot. I now have small padlocks on 3 of the 4 leg pins and a pin-lock for the 4th. I also have a padlock on the main swivel head pin.
The other type of theft that I've heard of is kids (I'm saying kids; could be anyone) pulling one of the leg pins out.

Thanks everyone for your replies: I have a Curt Q5 Hitch. It comes off in 2 sections. I believe the Pull Pin Plates that Terrelr mentioned will work on the bottom pins. Not sure what to do on the top pins. The Q5 comes off in two sections. I have asked Curt, but no answer yet. I am going to order the pull plates. Thanks guys.

Good thing they don't have any copper in them or the thiefs around here would be carjacking you just for the copper. They are taking copper from everywhere. Plumbing, wiring, a/c units. If they ever figure out how much a hitch weighs they will take them to sell for scrap. They have been stealing the carts we use for deliveries at work. They cost us about $350 apiece. I keep my jaws padlocked(DW says it is quieter) when towing. Never though about someone pulling the pins from the rails. I guess I have a new project.

I also drilled out the pins and used 4 same key locks in place of cotter pins. Not theft-proof but will take a bolt cutter to cut all 4 'small' locks
Also use a lock on FW hitch head and transfer it to hitch pull rod when towing so cannot be released by anyone while unit is parked while eating, shopping, etc.

I don't worry about theft, but my hitch weighs over 800lbs. It was installed using a fork lift and is bolted and welded in place. I've been amazed by unusual thefts, so I understand your concern. You just never know. I do lock my hitch when towing to keep "pranksters" from releasing it and causing the fiver to drop.

I actually just use a reciever pin with the lock on one end that I bought at Walmart. I have a reese hitch and it is a tight fit but I figure I only needed to lock one down so for 12 bucks I eliminated the worry of someone stealing it.
