We are planning on taking our 31ft motorhome to Lake Tahoe next week, staying through Labor Day. I know it's not likely that we can get reservations, so my question is - what state or natl. forest campgrounds can handle this size unit and have some spots that don't require reservations? Any recommendations?

You might check out Sugar Pine Pt., which is a Californa State Park located on northwest side of Lake Tahoe. No hookups, but they may have some "first come first served" sites available each day. Also, at Meeks Bay there is a National Forest Campground next to Meeks Bay Resort that may also have first come first come/first served sites available.

31' is too long for both Sugar Pine state Park and Meeks Bay National forest Campground. Fallen Leaf Lake can handle your size of RV but I am not sure if they have first come first serve sites. The other State Parks, Bliss and Emerald Bay cannot handle that size RV either. If you can't get reservations somewhere, you might be out of luck in this area on Labor Day weekend.

Check Granite Flat, Goose Meadows and Silver Creek along the Truckee River north of the lake. They rarely fill up.

I was going to add those, but I didn't want anyone telling me I steered them wrong. The noise from Hwy 89 in those sites is brutal being only about 50' from the road. But they are usually fairly well used on the weekends so some people must not be bothered by it.

We stayed at "Campground by the lake" and liked it:
