I've often wondered if you should take them, unless prescribed by your Doctor. Over the years I've asked my Dr., if I should take any vitamin or other, supplements and he has always indicated, no, as long as my diet is balanced there should be no need for them.
Unless of course medical tests indicate you should have a vitamin or a particular supplement. But that's a different situation and then a medical Dr. would prescribe what is necessary.
I do wonder about people 'self prescribing' these supplements for themselves.
I know some people that are convinced that they should take a particular supplement, because of something they read, or were convinced by a lay, not medical person.
Is it healthy ? Do they know what they should take, or are they just guessing that they need to take a particular supplement.
Seems like there could be some problems there. I dunno. I'm no expert, but I also suspect that neither are they.

I trust a Dr about as far as I can throw one, unless off a cliff counts.
The clue is when you were told "as long as".....there's your answer, for the
most part.

I think that people under estimate the power of supplements and vitamins both as a benifit and as a danger.
My wife had a friend that over-dosed on vitamins. It almost killer her. I also need to be aware of vitamins and supplements interacting with my heart medications.
As with anything we put into our body, we need to be well informed and with the availability of needed info on the web, my doctor, God love him, is my last source of advice.
Also, be very aware of interactions of food with certain medication. My daughter takes Cylosporin and I take Lipitor. Drinking grapefruit juice can have severe consequences for both of us while taking these drugs.

We read a book (eight way/steps? to lower cholesterol?) and it suggested taking Garlic(kyolic). Also eating fiber (oatmeal) and taking metamucil.
But I would be very careful as to quality and side effects before taking vitamins. Some are just washed out of your system, others dont and cause problems.

Our doctors have never discouraged Hubby and I from taking our multivitamins.

My doc discourages multi-vitamins, too. I DO take a milk thistle with doctor's blessings. It helps regenerate the liver and I had a liver problem.

Agreed.
My doctor recommends a multi-vitamin, B complex and calcium supplement for all his female patients over 40. My DH's cardiologist has him on a few vitamins/supplements (along with prescription meds) to help with cholesterol issues.
I think much of it depends on the individual doctor's opinion, since some say they're not necessary and others recommend them. I trust my doc implicitly, so I'll stick with his recommendation.

I think the key there is the balanced diet thing. I think it's fair to guess that not many of us have a truly balanced diet.

I take whatever my VA doctor wants me to take. She likes niacin and fish oil, so I take them.

Yep. They taught us in toxicology that "the difference between a drug and a poison is the dose."
