I have the same, and wired it the same way. Some will say it leaves the transfer switch vulnerable, but I'm not too worried about that. I figure it will take a pretty good hit to damage the transfer switch. I like the fact that it tells me the status of the generator, and helps protect against generator malfunctions that cause the wrong voltage or frequency. I figure that's more likely than the transfer switch being damaged.
The progressive has saved me from low voltage half a dozen times in the last year, and also protected me from a 20 amp outlet that had hot/neutral reversed. These are the kind of situations that are more common than surges. Make sure that anything you consider protects against the common voltage and wiring problems, not all of the cheapest ones do.
