I had a 2001 5.9 6 speed. Sold it for my '08 6.7 Auto 6 speed. The exhaust brake and the auto make it my choice. It's also quieter than the 5.9 if that matters to you.

It's a tough choice...drive both and get the one you like more.

Thanks for all the help. I'm glad I asked, as I was told the 5.9 had a 6-speed auto, which is obviously not the case. I will perhaps drive a 5.9 locally if I find a good price, the one I'm looking at buying is 2 hrs away.

I now have a final decision to make on my next TV. I've narrowed down to the following:

* 2008 RAM 3500 DRW 4x4 6.7auto 18k miles : $29k
* 2007 RAM 3500 DRW 4x4 5.9auto 29k miles : $27k

From what I've read here, I want to say the 5.9 is considered perhaps more tested/reliable? It also seem the 5.9 uses a tiny bit less gas - mile-for-mile? I know they are both AWESOME engines just wondering if anyone would recommend which way to go.

I'd rather have a 95-97 5.9L

If you're interested at all in the 08 then try and get a service report. Make sure all the flashes and updates are in place.

Diesel Power Magazine that is on the Stand now has a big article comparing the Two. I just skimmed it while in Auto Zone, but i believe it indicated the 5.9 has More Power. it compared several different aspects.

I second this. All the problems with the 6.7 seemed to have been ironed out with the flashes and updates. Be sure the dealer does a thourough job of this.

I like my pre-emmission 5.9, not sure how well it does with all the extra "stuff".

However, I'd say they are both very good TV's. For teh $2K difference you can add an exhaust brake to the 5.9 if it only has the 4spd. From what I've heard, I'd like the 6spd but I have not driven one yet.

Thos eprices seem high in this market...

I love my 5.9.
Has good power and no smog junk.

I'd love to have the additional power, exhaust brake and 6-speed tranny of the 6.7, though.

Tough call...though I chose my 5.9 even though there were 6.7 models on the lot. Don't regret the decision one bit, but had I chose the 6.7 I don't think I would have regretted it, either.

Have driven my sons several times, great power, But I will say if you have had (this may be pretty bold ) the pleasure of owning and driving one of the older Superduties with the 7.3 as I have for the past 10 years the early 99 bought in July 98 I think you will know what I am getting out. Its hard not to be biased, but still need to be truthful, but having the chance to compare the two as far as driving, handling overall visibilty, mirrors etc . I am sorry that 10 year old ford has it beat hands down. There are two things about the Dodge that I like the pulling power ( but not the mileage ) and the exhaust brake both I can add to the ford if the itch gets that bad.

In conclusion, I tried to talk myself into buying a 2008 6.4 Superduty,after having driven the same truck for nearly 10 years, got over wanting one, glad I did, my 99 has been nothing but marvelous for 10 ten years.And after having a chance to not just test drive a Dodge, but use one for awhile no thanks. Chevy no comment have no personal knowledge of them.
