I had a fine yellow or bright green ( I'm colorblind ) vertical line on my screen. Today I got another one. Any one know what's going on and how to fix it?

Yup, you are looking at a new screen. My Dell went through 2 screens under warranty.

Good luck,

Yep, your screen is going out. Not sure how comfortable you are in changing it, but it isn't hard. You can also take it to a reputable repair shop for an estimate.

You can probably pick up a replacement on eBay or the web. You'd need to Google your make and model number.

I just had a Toshiba Tecra's screen replaced (it was cracked). Toshiba covered the labor but not the part cost, around $300 with tax.

eBay's the way. My HP’s screen croaked out, so I searched for the same model unit and bought one for about $75. (It had no hard drive) That also gave me an extra CD drive, battery, motherboard, and everything else. There are also ''as is'' laptops with dead power supplies and the like even cheaper. All you need is one with a good screen.

Another tactic would be to get a good working one that’s identical to yours, and swap out the hard drive with your old one. It’ll be as if you never had any problem as long as all the hardware is the same. It’ll cost more, ($150 ~ $300) but it saves the hassle of reinstalling your apps or dealing with Windoze XP’s 50 digit re-install number. (With a call to Micro$oft)

Do a search for your laptop’s exact model number, to the last digit, and you should have a lengthy list to choose from.

Laptops are a pain to diagnose. It could be the screen, the inverter, or even the cable. IBM had a bad batch of Thinkpads where the cable was a little short. After a while of opening and closing the lid the cable started to unplug causing lines.

Here is a site that shows how to disassemble many of the Toshiba laptops. Don't know if will help or not.

Some time ago I had a similar problem (Toshiba Satellite series laptop) except the vertical line was purple. It would come and go at will. I figured it was he screen going bad but I just lived with it. Finally, the line just went away on its own and hasn't been back in any months. In your case, maybe you should just live with it for a while and see if that happens to you, too.

It can be the screen, the cable, or screen driver. My experience has been most often loss of a range of colors, or a row of pixels, is a connection problem. Think of what it must take to get those signals through a hinge between the base and the lid.

Very rarely, something like this will be a firmware problem, and covered by a BIOS update.

Something that looks like a random crack across the screen, it is the screen.

With labor rates for service, replacing a connector can cost almost as much as replacing the screen.
