We're picking up our new (to us) 17' Casita in a couple of weeks in eastern Long Island. From there we're headed west. We have 2 routing options. The first is to take the ferry back to CT, head north and route around NYC. We avoid NYC but incur over $100 in ferry fees plus all the extra driving. The second option is to head across LI and go right through NYC over the GW Bridge. We're pretty darn nervous about traveling through NYC with a trailer that we've never towed before. We'd go through after the morning rush hour of course. Opinions, please!

Just my personal opinion, but it would be worth $100 to me to avoid New York.

A few years back DW and I went over the GW bridge while towing a Pop Up during what is called non rush hours. It was one of the worst mistakes I had ever made. Where the lanes merged after paying the toll no one wanted to let us over. DW was scared and thought that some folks were going to hit us instead of letting us over. We were planning a trip to the North East last year, that we did not make, but we were going to drive out of the way to avoid the NYC area. We now have a 25' TT, but I would still go out of the way if we had the Pop Up. My opinion is to pay the $100 toll.

We do it all the time. Not a problem......where do you want to go.....its all timing...although you better be a real early bird if you want to stay away from everyone.

We'll be picking up the Casita in a small town (can't remember the name now) very near Riverhead.

Welcome to Casita land! We love ours and I am sure you will too! I am from NYC orginally and as I recall riverhead is way out on the island. I would take the ferry IMHO. I just came back from Nyc with our Casita. I have lost my lost my Nyc driving skills from my last visit home 25 yrs ago!

Okay, thats good enough....then it may be worth the expense to take the Ferry. I am not a big Ferry fan, but from that point on the Island, even your GPS if you have one will tell you to take the Ferry. Its wild to see that on the screen. Yes - take the ferry --- if your traveling from CT taking 95/91 North back to MA, VT and ME yes...that would be the best route.

Plus you will not have to worry about taking the Bridge? Not sure why you need the GW, I would take the Throgs to 95...but just as well becuase the area of 95 is just as bad as it gets as far as conjestion.

The only downer really about the ferry is that you need to make a reservation, which should not be a problem...but then you need to arrive on time and early at that.

The GW should not be a big issue to go through the city. You don't need to be on any local streets, and once on I295 and then I95 it's not a tough run. Last time we were across, the road surfaces were typical NY, but if you have any pulling experience (which it seems you do) it's nothing to panic about.
