1/2" squat is all you need.

I agree w/YGuy. I also use the "squat" method, but connect the trailer brakes and use the manual break function on my Prodigy controller to hold the trailer while I back under it.
What do you guys mean when you say you "lock the jaws"? My Superglide has some type of automatic spring locking mechanism that locks as soon as the pin is positioned properly in the hitch. I thought all hitches did this.

I am pulling my first 5th wheel. I have the hitch slightly higher than the trailer, back into it, and stop when it locks. I then put truck in drive to check connection. If the truck stays put (it always does) I then lift the landing gear. It works for me, but I don't know if I may be doing something wrong. I am open to any experienced advice.

Nope only a few automatically lock like the Pullrite SG and Super Fifth hitches. Most have to employ a lock bar or pin once coupled

i also squat the truck about 2-3 inches when hooking up. i haven't ruined my lube plate in about 40 hook ups. i also do a visual to make sure my hitch jaws are wrapped around the king pin before i put up the tail gate.
