So with an inaugural trip from anchorage to Lake Charles, LA set to depart in four days, I am struggling with my unmounted spare (19.5) storage. I want to bring the spare. 2002 Winnebago Adventurer allows storage only in the largest basement compt, which is already full. Tire is too tall to fit under the bed. Has anyone hung their spare from the ladder? The ladder should have no problem with the weight, tire weighs less than 50 lbs(after all, it will bear my weight). I figure a couple of hooks and straps to secure the tire to the ladder should work, eh? What's the heaviest thing you have hung on your ladder?

I hang my grill from my ladder

However, I would believe a spare tire would be to heavy.

If you have a receiver hitch you could try this tire rack

Have a great time camping,

You don't hang on the ladder when the rig is bouncing down the road. I think it's too heavy for the ladder too. I'd suggest securing it to the roof if there's just no place else to put it.

If you're not pulling a toad, how about renting a small utility trailer?

The ladder will support your weight fine. Consider this, the tire will hang there over rough roads and bouncing. I suspect that over a period of time you may find damage to the ladder mounts. Would you like to be following if the tire becomes loose and falls off? I think I would find a more suitable method of mounting and leave the ladder for lighter objects. Just my 2 cents...

Never hung NUTIN from my ladder.
Your weight climing up there when parked is a lot different than the tires weight bouncing back there when moving. JMO

Do you have any room to have a spair tire mounted to a winch under the frame? Thats how mine is.

One other question if you don't mind...
Why would you bring an "unmounted" spair?
I have seen people remove and put on tires without a machine but it is some real back breaking work.

Two things come to mind.....
- If you have a toad - Roof Rack
- Roof of MH. If you are considering a long term solution, why not get a large fiberglas or plastic clam shell and have it mounted on the roof of MH. That will protect the tire from UV, etc. If it's just 1 trip, bungee cords.

The spare tire for my '03 Adventurer is mounted underneath between the generator and propane tank.

Your Adventurer already has a spare tire/wheel underneath in the back, doesn't it? Mine did. So is this an additional spare tire, no wheel?
