Does anyone have any feedback on either Hershey Campground or Spring Gulch in New Holland PA? They look really nice but are looking to hear from those who have visited either or both. Thanks

Hershey puts you mostly out of Amish country. Spring Gulch is very nice and very close to the Amish. Country Haven CG gives you a glorious vew of Amish Farms and the rolling countryside. Several other CG's in the area also. I'm sure other folks will add to this thread.
Spring Gulch is A very nice CG. Has lots of things to do is located great for Amish country. Pretty busy1 That used to be our go-to CG in Lancaster area. This past June we went to Roamers Retreat, on RT 30
Liked it, Much more on the quiet side which is what we look for when going without the Grandkids. Still right in Amish Country though.
Lake In Wood Is another real nice CG with A whole lot to do at the CG.
Bit of A drive back down the mountain to Amish Country but not bad.
Not A bad drive to the Antique town of Adamstown from there either.
Happy Camping!!!!
There are many nice campgrounds in the area. Depending on what you want to do:
Old Mill Stream is close to everything and within walking distance of a great outlet. A very central location right behind Dutch Wonderland-don't worry-still very quiet. Also, many places to eat in the immdediate area. No swimming pool or other activites, more of a kick back, grown-up campground. Very nicely kept.
Lake in Wood is a bit more out of the way. My opinion-many nice sites close to the main store-we don't camp here if the only sites left are farther away (just a personal thing). Some of the more distant sites are a bit isolated. Probably one of the better places in the area if you have kids. A mini golf course, paddle boats, a nice store, a cafe that is usually open, nice pools. Again, well kept.
Country Haven-completely kick back. No activities. If you have kids or want a wooded area-don't go here. Great for relaxing and close to Amish activites.
Spring Gulch-we didn't like it. Not sure why-just didn't.
Starlite-nice campground-not really by Amish country (probably 20 minutes away), but close to the Renaissance Faire, which is now open week-ends.
Thanks for your replies. We are looking for spacious, wooded sites in Amish country. My DH, being from CA, is fascinated with them and how they live. I grew up in Ohio and frequently went to Amish country as a child.
If you want to be in the heart of Amish country, don't have kids with you and don't care about pool, etc. I recommend Beacon Hill Campground, 1/4 mile from main intersection of Intercorse PA. Sam King, the amish farmer accross the street is a great guy. If you get a campsite in the lower portion by the road you can sit and watch the buggies go back and forth from sunup til well after sunset (with their battery operated lights). It's reasonable with full hookups for $33 and the hosts are nice and very helpful. Amish girls come through selling fruit, vegetables, etc. I offered to take Sam to the farm store several miles away and learned a lot about the Amish during the trip and he kindly repaid me with a book he had authored. We were there in June and I'd go back in a heartbeat. we had planned 2 days and stayed 4. Oh.. and best of all they have an off leash fenced area for Lil Jack and Pickles. Our dogs loved it and the little Mennonite girls next door loved the dogs.

We stayed at Country Haven when we were there in July and it was very nice, but they have lots of rules and really no facilities. Not even a pool, which for their price there should be in my opinion. Great Amish family across the road who have an in home bakery and their kids come to the campground at night to sell off any remaining items. Beautiful views of the valley below on some of the sites near the entrance. Our site was actually before the check in gate.LOL

If you want to get away from all the traffic and touristy stuff around Lancaster, go an extra 70 miles to Lewistown on US 322. Great campground up there called The Locust ( www.locustcampground.com )with a restored section of the Pennsylvania Canal in the campground. The campground is actually located between the canal and the Juniata River. We spent an entire summer in this campground and enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend it.
Amish dominate the next valley over around Barrville, Belleville, and Milroy (about 17 miles away). Anyone there can point you to stores that sell Amish crafts and other things.
The area is gorgeous and located in the mountains with some beautiful nearby state parks with lakes which are no-fee in Pa. Travel around Barrville (E Backmountain Road) on a Sunday morning and you will be just about the only auto on the road, everything else is horse-and-buggy. As I mentioned previously, little traffic and no throngs of tourists. This place is a hidden jewel.
Wherever you go, enjoy your trip!
