I will occasionally be towing 2,500 to 3,000 lbs with my jeep. Will I need a transmission oil cooler ? I have a 2006 X model with automatic and a 4.0L motor.

Make sure your life insurance is paid up. The short wheelbase and high center of gravity make for a really unstable TV. If you have to hit the brakes in a curve, the rear end of the Jeep will get pushed out. I almost rolled my Wrangler towing a 1000 pound load on a utility trailer by crossing a bridge joint!! If you are talking about towing a boat from your house to the ramp a few miles, ok but if you are going to go a distance with passengers in the Jeep, bad idea.
Personally, I wouldnt tow that much weight with mine, yours is real close to mine. I tow roughly 1500lb loaded utility trailer, once in a great while, its okay, but I wouldnt go any further. That being said If you are towing once in awhile, I wouldnt worry about.
What is the load? Something flat that weighs 2500# is a lot different to tow than a high center of gravity RV. And yes, I would install a trans oil cooler on any vehicle I planned to use for towing. Especially in hot weather, like Florida.
In answer to your question, you can probably get a good indication of whether an auxiliary cooler or not by finding out if one is included in the towing package from DC. If it's part of the tow package then that's Jeeps way of saying you need one.
I was thinking short wheelbase Wranglers were rated to tow up to 2000 lbs. The new 4 door ones that have a really long wheelbase are still only rated up to 3500 lbs. I think whether or not you need a tranny cooler will be the least of your issues.
My owners manual says you can tow up to 3500 lbs. I would not want to do this day in and day out but I feel OK about doing it once in a while on short trips (less than 100 miles) on dry roads.
No, you won't need a tranny cooler. The 4.0L TJ's have high capacity radiators, and the tranny fluild is routed through the radiator, so it gets the benefit too.
I tow a 5x10 utility trailer with my 2001 TJ once and a while, and it's OK, but that is a low and short trailer. I would not dream of coupling a travel trailer to a TJ. Not even an Airstream Bambi.
