Hi all

Just set up two converter boxes on my 5ER

When I can find the signal they work ok but finding the signal is worse the zeroing the sat dish, at least they tell you where to start looking.

Does anyone use an omnidirectional tv antenna and if so does it work and if so which one.

Thanks in advance

Just got home with two of the convertor boxes myself. My cards expire on the 19th so I cut it kinda close. Checked at Best Buy, Circuit City an Radio Shack and they were all $59.00. Went to Wal Mart and they had a huge stack of them (RCA's with pass thru feature) for $45.00. I haven't hooked them up yet, hope I have better luck.
BTW: I heard that Radio Shack had a model that had an analog meter on it that would show the signal strength. Inquired about it at Radio Shack today and they didn't know a thing about it. If one could find that model, it would simplify the setup a lot.

The Zeneth model from Circuit City has a signal strength screen on it.

I picked up 2 Digital Stream converter boxes with analog pass-through (lets you watch analog channels if you hit a button on the remote, or turn the converter off) from Radio Shack last week. They have a signal meter screen that can be displayed to check the signal strength on each channel.

My 2 boxes are for bedroom TVs in our house. We have an LCD HDTV in our trailer, and in the COE park we most often stay at, little rotation of the antenna is necessary to get more digital channels than we were ever able to get on analog. At the campground, we are about 65 miles SW of Forth Worth, 80 miles SW of Dallas, and about 35 miles NE of Waco. We pick up digital channels from all three locations amazingly well.

I have yet to find a good omnidirectional antenna for use with DTV (And I've looked pretty hard!).

The folks at antennaweb.org have a nifty little utility for figuring out where to point your antenna. It asks for a lot of info but only the zip code is mandatory to get results.

People should also be aware the the Winegard antennas are advertised and marketed as "bi-directional" and they are... for VHF. Almost all DTV channels are in the UHF band though. The Winegard's will act as bi-directional antennas for the lower end of the VHF band but as you go up in the channels, the performance of the back side of the antenna drops off significantly.

Jim: I talked to Winegard today about this, and they're really stand-off about answering questions about the performance differences or characteristics on this antenna between VHF & UHF.Basically I got nowhere. Very strange..

I can understand why they would be! lol How many RVs are out there using Winegard antennas?

But they can't really deny it.Winegard's own specs show the effectiveness of their antennas. Scroll down to the bottom of that page and look at their own charts. Two nice big lobes for channels 2 and 7 but only one lobe for channels 32 and 56.

By the time to get up to channel 32 the back-side of the antenna is completely useless.

I just hooked up one from Walmart. When U press display it tells U the signal strength-at least that's what I think it means.

They do make an omni tv antenna, Radio Shack sells one. Looks a bit like a "Flying Saucer" I think Winegard sells the same one for more money

However several Digital converters have a signal strength meter in 'em. My Access has a 'Signal' button on the remote and my Insignia has it in the menus
