Can someone out there help me? We are on vacation and stopped at a picnic area today. I started up my generator to run our AC. It started up fine and ran for about 5 minutes then the engine started surging. My rig has only 6000 miles on it and the generator has 80 hours. I checked the gas filter and it was clean. If i let it sit for a few minutes, then start it up, it will run fine for about 45 secounds then start surging again. Any ideas?

Mine did exactly the same thing the other day and I had my fuel switched off. It might be something simple.

I keep thinking it's a fuel problem also but I don't have a cut off valve and I removed the filter and blew thru it so it's not plugged up. I have over 1/2 tank of gas so it's not too low to run.

I would check the state of your batteries. It seems to me that funny things happen when the batteries are not fully charged or have a problem such as a dead cell. Just a thought.

If the governor needs adjusting, a small engine will do that alot.

If you are under a warranty, I'd find a dealer and have it diagnosed / fixed. I would hope that it would be covered. It sounds like either a air - Fuel mixture issue or a govenor issue. A govenor with a bad spring will cause a small engine to surge or rev. You may wabt to check the oil level too. The 5500 has a low oil shut off. It may be just on the low side causing the engine to do goofy things...

Good luck and keep us posted
