Got great advice for c/g's in Memphis as we visit a sick relative. Now we thought since we are near Arkansas that Hot Springs might be a fun side trip as we are not in any hurry. What do you know about that area and the Springs? I so appreciate all the expert advice.

I can't believe you haven't gotten a response to this question! There have been quite a few threads in this forum about this place - you might try a search and see if that can help you. We haven't been there - yet - but will be interested in seeing what your replies are.

Hot Springs is a great place for a day or so visit. There are restored Historic bath houses to tour etc. While in that area do consider going to one of the crystal mines. They have an area where they dump loads of mine tailings and for a fee you can dig through it for crystals. Most are fairly small but you can find some Large ones. "Arkansas" Diamonds are actually cut from clear crystals mined near Hot Springs. Last time we were there we saw a couple drive up from one of the remote mines with a 75lb cluster that was 2 feet across. Also if you have an extra day drive up scenic 7 hwy (hope I remember that # right) to Eureka Springs. Neat little Historic town with shops and an operating steam railway you can ride.

The "springs" are underground; originally the Indians used them as "healing waters" and then in the 20s they were popular with the rich and often the corrupt (Capone's crowd). Most of the old bathhouses are there, most sadly empty. One is still used as a spa and another as a very interesting museum. All the bathhouses are part of the National Park right smack in the middle of the city. Nice walking/hiking. The downtown area is kind of in a transition. There are some great shops and restaurants as well as the Arlington Hotel (worthy of at least a stop in to look around), where I reccommend the Sunday brunch. You can check out a few of the original found springs at street level or just slightly above. Around town there are several lakes and parks, all of which are very nice. Just outside town is Garvan Woodland Gardens, a must-see in my opinion ANY time of year.

Hot Springs is a neat town with lots to do. They have a good amusement park for
the young ones, mountain lookout tower, duck boats rides, paddle wheeler rides on lake Hamilton with dinner at nite. Several antiques shops, 2 lakes to fish,
reasonable hotels, many good restaurants, old bath houses, western music theater shows and huge indoor flea market. Coy's steak house is very good. Lots of downtown shops within walking distance of springs and bathhouses. Very senic,
mountain and hills. Have fun.

A drive up to Petit Jean State Park would be very worthwhile.

IMO, Eureka Springs beats Hot Springs to death. If you only have one day, do Eureka and let Hot Springs cool off.
