alageezer wrote: Interesting story about Trojan vs Sams/Walmart batteries. I used to drive a tractor trailer for a major battery manufacturer in the southeast. We would take a load of lead bars from our smelter and deliver them to a Trojan plant in Atlanta. We would then bring a load of their batteries without stickers back to our distribution center, where we would put Sams or Walmart, or whatever other retailer's stickers, and deliver them to the store.
It has been six or eight years, but I remember Costco selling their GC batts that were exactly like Trojans. Right down to the color, the top loops, everything.
Recently, I have seen the same store selling GC from two different manufacturers. Apparently, things change often.

I strongly suggest you also install a good battery monitor to really keep an eye on the performance of your new batteries. The green, yellow, red lights that came stock in my 02 Dolphin just didn't do the job. I replaced the trojan 105's with a pair of Lifeline AGM's. I'm VERY impressed, so much so, that I installed another pair in parallel with the first pair. With 400W of solar recharging, I was able to camp for 5 nights without ever starting the generator.
One note on the AGM's: They're costly, so it really pays to shop them out. There are some smokin deals out there. Happy camping!
Couldn't agree with you more Alfred. Monaco figured that out when they configured the house batteries for our coach. It actaully came with (4) 6v batteries for the house.
Unfortunately, they fell short engineering the chassis battery side. Our charger does not charge the chassis batteries when the coach is plugged in. So, I have purchased a separate maintainer for same.
A few months ago I replaced the 24d size batteries with a pair of 4d batteries. Very happy with that swap.

What if you have four house batterys, how do you hook them up for 12v?

You run 2 6 volt batteries in series making a 12 volt bank. Then run your 2 12 V banks in parallel to supply the coach. This can be done with as many even number of batteries you have room for i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8 batteries. My Coach has 6 6v batteries hooked up in this fashion and it works great.
I replaced my 2 large 12 volt batteries with 4 6 volt golf cart batteries. My main reason for doing so, I was on the road when the 12's went bad and was having a hard time finding replacements. Best I could do was a 2 day wait while they would be shipped in. Golf cart batteries are readily available, and they are working better then the 12's.

Connect two in series to make a 12 volt battery. Then connect the other two in series to make a second 12 volter. Then take the two 12 volt batteries and connect them in parallel.

I guess I'm really stupid but how do 2 sets of 6volt GC batteries get hooked in series, then the 2 sets get hooked in paralel to supply the coach. Will the stock charging arrangement take care of this set up.
I had to rebuild the battery bank on my 2001 Holiday Rambler and junked the two 12 volts for four 6volts. I went with the MK sealed AGM 200 AH batteries. Went dry camping for a week and didn't even have to use the genset once to recharge (let the solar panel do all the work). Ran inverters, etc. intermitently throughout the days.
Series 6volt is absolutely the way to go. I recommend sealed batteries as they are maintenance free and tend to last longer. www.batterystuff.com has pretty good prices.

Not a stupid question at all.
This link is to a document that might explain that with diagrams. It's not RV specific, but gets the idea across.
