I always wondered why we do that. One of those things they didn't teach us in cemetary...er, I mean seminary.

When you start taking yourself too seriously is when you get into trouble. As a friend once said, "Grudges are too heavy to carry around!" Somehow the Golden Rule got twisted to "Do unto others before they do it to you"!

Perhaps that's why that gal zipped by me (on the right) at a downtown intersection, and blew right through the red light; she was lost in thought!
Good thing she was on a bicycle, not in a car.
I agree, the pronunciation is probably a regional thing (or "thang"). Around here you will hear either way, occasionally.

Usually after about ten to twenty miles my thoughts tend to revolve around one of the following:
Quote:
"Damn, my a** hurts..."
"I can't feel anything below my waist, what gender am I again?..."
"Its a sad day when I need to pedal to maintain speed going downhill..."
"Oh look, another hill (Add smile)!"
"Alright, I've officially tried all 21 speeds, and they all suck...."
After 20-40 miles:
Quote:
"Damn, my a** hurts so bad I can't feel it anymore..."
"Remind me again why I didn't just drive there?"
"I think I may need to change my gender on my drivers license after this..."
"Why is it I get a headwind when on my way there, and now a headwind on the way back? Shouldn't it be a tailwind now?"
"Note to self, attach gas engine to bicycle...."

As I was looking in the various sites looking for a new bike I noticed that there are several models that have what they call electric assist. It must be battery power as you would be limited by the length of your cord (I could insert a comment here but I would get "poofed) if it were AC current. All of those comments about the perils of riding are pretty much right on. I tend to use a saddle that follows the concourse of my derriere and install it on a new bike when I get one. It may look ratty but if it fits I use it. I just purchased a new bike with disc brakes as I am getting to lazy to try and straighten wheels and caliper brakes tend to drag on bent spots. I did some research on them and hope the good over rides the bad. It is also a 21 speed but lots different than any previous 21 speed I had before. Geared for speed instead of hills and I found that the top 5 or so speeds are going to be unused until I get back to the level groud of the valley. It is an unwritten law that says you ride into the wind on the way out and then you can have it in your face on the way back because the darned wind is going to change directions with you. I ride about 3500 to 4000 miles a year going nowhere and in south Texas I try to get in 15--20 miles every morning.

Quote: First, why do we call a pedal bike a bicycle and pronounce it bi- sickle and call one that is self powered a motor cycle and pronounce it motor-cicle with a long i sound?
I have been riding bikes and motorcycles for over 40 years and not once did I think that.
