Mayonaise, Yes boys and girls plain ole mayonaise. It'll take tar off and won't damage the finish. Then just wash it off. No bad smells no harmfull chemicals.
My favorite chemical for removing tar wouuld be goo-gone.

There are probably 50 different commercial products to remove tar and I've never found one yet that didn't work. Pick one you like and go to work.

Cooking oil, baby oil etc. No odor and easy on the hands. The oil haelp loosen and break down the tar. If you look at most lables for contents in Chemical removers I bet you will see "oil" of some type listed.
Pour some on a rag and rub over tar. Some times I use a non scratching spong from the kitchen. Put some oil in a plastic bowl. Dip sponge in and get to work. No mater what you use you will have your work cut out for you. And if you happen to get tar on your cloths. Work the cooking oil into the spot. Let it soak for a while and launder. Got this tip form my grandmother and I saw it first hand when my Grandfather and uncle were redoing the garage roof with the rooled roofing material and, yep, you got it, hot tar. The cooking oil worked great on cloths, tools, even some that happened to splatter on the car, windows, etc.

I used almost 3 large cans of WD-40 when my wife drove the X through a strip of road with fresh "oil" which as we all know is TAR!!!!!
After using the WD-40, I waxed the truck. I was very pleased as to how well it worked. You can spray it and watch the tar start to run down the side. I used several red shop rags.
It looks good now!!!

A few years back I had to take my new white service van to a customers site via fresh tar with the small stones. The sides were covered! I used an old bath towel with kerosene and made quick work of it.

Thanks all for your suggestions! I think the consensus is WD-40. I have the Costco sized cans, so I guess that'll be it. I suppose I can always try several things If this doesn't work. :-)

OK, I found this today & bought 10! I can always return the extra 9 if it doesn't work.

How much tar do you have to remove? As others have stated, most petroleum based products will remove it. For small areas, WD-40, bigger areas, get a gallon of Kerosene.
