My DW had a family reunion in Panama City Florida on the 4th of July. We took six weeks to make the round trip, with 2 weeks of that spent in in Panama City Beach.

Total round trip miles 5200.
Total paid for fuel $3055.
Total Paid for RV Parks for round trip $1291.
Plus we traveled at our own pace, stopped to see the sites, and had our bed, kitchen, bathroom, direct tv, and our Jeep with us.

My Brother Flew down from Washington DC and stayed at Panama City Beach for two weeks.
Cost of renting a waterfront Condo $4000.
Round trip airfare for three from DC, I am not sure but I am guessing over $1000.
Car Rental for 2 weeks $420.

So who had the best vacation?
I'm guessing me and the DW.

We average about $125 per day with current gas, meals in TT, campgrounds (nice), propane and other essentials for using a TT. A bit skewed on the numbers from our perspective. Spending a whole month and 4,000 miles expenses around $3,700 for the above.

Happy Trails

Nothing? I don't know about you but I tend to eat meals no matter where I'm at. Sometimes I even leave the house and go out to eat...

Did you eat meals while not on vacation?. If so. It cost nothing extra to stay home.

I never figure in the cost of food or beer when I travel in the RV. I eat and drink when I'm home. I also very seldomly use CG's, mostly go to the desert to off-road. So the additional fuel cost and broken off-road buggy parts are my main expense.

There's a huge difference between "nothing" and "nothing extra".

If someone claims that it cost them $500 to go on a weekend vacation and they would have spent $200 by staying home anyway, then the "extra" cost of going elsewhere is only $300. The basic accounting principle of creating a baseline is to discover what that actual "extra" cost is. It really isn't all that complicated...

The cost of vacation. Is your accomodations, and fuel. Nothing more. So if those 2 things were $500.00. That is what our vacation cost. That for us is how simple it is. So if we stay home. WE don't have those 2 costs. So it cost nothing to stay home.

The only comparasons that make sense. Is between camping cost, and motels, or condo cost. In that area. We saved over $1700. on our last vacation, by camping.

Lets include the price plus interest divided by the nights the RV is used, than they can talk about saving money, and of course insurance and upkeep.
Than they probably will not be able to talk about how cheap it is.

I am somewhat amazed to find someone foolish enough to actually admit that they beleive that.

Kind of like how foolish it is to compare the cost of sitting still, to traveling.

As for the cost saving of my vacation. According to the rental book we got while there. The folks in the house beside the CG. Paid $3000.00 +, not counting fuel, To stay there for 7 days. I paid $300.00 to stay in the CG for 8 days, and used $300.00 in fuel to get there and back. These are the comparasons I use. Actuall cost.
What about TV cost? You ask. Well here in the south. Most everybody has a truck, camper or not. We did, and will. (A man, just needs a truck) So that is a nonissue. As for the TT. 5 trips at those kind of savings will pay for my TT. We have done many more than that. So my 8 day vacation. Cost me $600.00.

Lets see how this works out $$$ wise.
Birmingham to Gulf Shores - miles 285.
Non towing mpg 15 basic round trip fuel 38gal x $3.75 gal = $142.50
towing 10 mpg = 57 gals x $3.75= $213.75.
Condo or hotel no less that $100 night + 18% tax
Campground around $30 night plus there is NO lodging tax so tax is only around 8%
So for my 5 night camping trip I spend $72 more on gas
but also spend atleast $70 LESS a night for lodging.
I think the TT is well worth the money.
