Thanks Everyone,

We are going to check out the Rafter J Bar. I love this web site and the information you can get from the people that know.

Thanks again,

We are planning to be at Rafter J Bar around the 12th also. Will make reservations next week and probably stay a week and then on to Yellowstone. I think they close on Sept 20. Hope to see ya'll there.

Hill City would be closer to the attractions you're interested in. We just got back yesterday from that area; it's really lovely. We stayed at Rafter J, but we drove past the KOA several times and it looks nice. I've had some not so good KOA experiences, but this looked like a park where I'd be happy to stay.

Regarding Rafter J, the sites were decent (we stayed in the Base Camp), the views were incredible, there are full hookups, I'm not sure about cable TV (didn't check into it as we didn't need it), and there is Wifi, although it was spotty. I got onto the internet about one third of the times I tried.

The Hill City area is the most centrally located in the Hills! we like Horse Thief Campground and will probably stay there again when we head through the area!

Ditto on Horsethief Campground. Very nice place, really friendly people who run it. I don't think there is cable, though and the internet connection was a little spotty depending where your site was located. If we ever go back, we will definitely stay there again.

Hill City is much closer than Rapid City. We had to go into Rapid City to kennel our dog when we went to Rushmore, and it was a bit of a trek.

Base camp at Rafter J has the internet connection and they have the famous $2.00 all you can eat pancakes every morning. We woke to a herd of elk in the meadow and got to hear the trumpeting in the evenings.

Both retired. 1 year until son finishes college, then financial freedom! We lost Max, the Schnoodle after 16 wonderful years but now enjoy Nicklaus Von Schnoodle (Nicky), who is a full time job. Our new Allegro Bay 34 XB is wonderful.
