I have a little game I like to play. Whenever I find a young kid at a checkout stand and I'm paying with cash, I wait until they ring up my total. If my total is say $7.34, I lay a $10.00 bill down, they enter that amount and the screen says I get $2.66 back in change.

Before they can retrieve my $2.66 out of the drawer, I'll get change out of my pocket and hand them the .34 cents. I guarantee you 9 out of 10 of the kids will stand there with a blank look on their face. On several occasions, a kid has handed me back way too much change, as it has totally blown their mind at that point. I have fun trying to explain to them how to get me the corrct amount, but most never have a clue what is happening.

I feel like going to the store right now as a matter of fact....

My mom does that ALL the time...I think it's kind of funny. I know how to count change better than some 20 yr. olds!

If this was my child's school district, I would move.

Can you say 'No Child Left Behind'. I taught from 1966 to 1972 when I went into another profession. Society has been dumbing down the educational system for the last 20 yrs and society always blames the teachers. Quite frankly I don't understand why anyone goes into the educational field today.

This was poofed and I think I figured out why, so I omitted the "offending" text and will tread very lightly on the rest. I took the time to repost this because it really illustrates one of the major problems in our school systems and society's slide into accepting the dwindling quality and content of our public school programs.

The following is a humorous illustration of how good course content (1960's) can be diluted by social pressures, starting with the original ME generation of the '70's:

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1960s...

Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math In 1990

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80 and his profit is $20 Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 2000

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20.
What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class
participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels
feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers.)

NO, I would not want to be a teacher!
For LOTS of reason, and "politically correct" school administrators are way down on the list.

That's the trouble. You have to fight for a no-nonsense school program because idiots are making the rules. Don't move, go to the next school board meeting.

I have to think that, when challanged, people that advocate this kind of stuff are going to look incompetent or maybe even stupid.

I am a teacher of two--my own kids. We started homeschooling for many reasons, some of them related to what's said in the article. I can't fathom why anyone would want to be a public school teacher nowadays. I know several really talented teachers who love working with kids but who are beyond frustrated with having their hands tied when it comes to doing their job. I suspect they'll be moving to other careers soon.
