I assume there must be several types of tow dollys, but I do not know what type or which would be the Best, Safest, and can be handled by one person.

Can you all help me with infomation?

Thanks,
Britt

I would go for one that has brakes installed. Surge brakes are OK, electric brakes are better, some say.
If it folds up for storage, that would also be a plus.
Since there are various sizes, make sure your vehicle fits the dolly.
I have heard that the dollys which have the steerable wheels are better than the turntable styles. I don't know, I have never used one.
Good luck in your search.

I've pulled a Demco KarKaddy SS for 3.5 years, 28,000 miles & am well pleased with it. It has surge brakes which have worked quite will even in the mountains & we have been in quite a few (see map below). The tongue folds back & the ramps fold up to reduce storage by almost 50%. It is heavily galvanized so it should never have a rust problem. It is built to haul large toads and the tongue weight will not exceeding 100#. Because the wheels pivot rather than the toad wheel plate I’ve been able to make full 360 degree tight turns without the dolly fenders touching the toad. Many places sell for less than the “suggested retail” so shop around.

I have the Stehl Tow Dolly with electric brakes and like it fine. It has the turntable, not the steerable wheels, but I don't have a problem with that. It does not fold up, but it isn't that big to begin with. I am happy with it. I will keep it for several years until I trade my current toad and buy one I can tow 4 down.

Question on Brakes.

First I need to tell you that I know I may be breaking the law so please do not scream at me.

If I was to use this dolly on the back of my fifth wheel would I be using a seperate brake controller for the electric or the surge brakes?

In other words would I have 2 brake controllers in my truck or can I just use the one?

If you have surge brakes there is no controler and no you won't be braking the law unless you get over length.

Do the rear wheels down on the toad constitute the third trailer??????????? I think I would want to get that real clear before starting the "parade". Both a licensing and an insurance issue!!!!!!!!

Like was pointed out above, surge brakes need no controller. Electric brakes probably WOULD need a separate controller since you have to adjust the controller to the brakes and the two trailers have different brakes. Trying to do 2 controllers would be interesting though. You would probably have to use the center pin as the second brake controller and have the 5er pass that pin through to the correct pin on its 7 pin socket.

The third trailer consists of everything attached to the ball behind the 5er.
