My F550 has the 6.0 and it gets 13 empty and 8 loaded with 16k. It has the 4.88 gears and 6spd manual. My brother in law has an '08 F450 and he pulls a huge horse trailer with/ LQ and gets like 5mpg loaded and 9mpg empty. He hates the truck and is fixing to sell it. He's always complaining about the thing.

Wow, either something is wrong with your BIL's truck, or he has a very heavy right foot. My experience with 08 -F450 & 4.30 gears is about same as your F550, maybe a little better.

I must admit I have a heavy foot at times and the worst mileage I've gotten pulling the Raptor was 6.2mpg and that was in a constant 40mph headwind. I honestly don't know how my mileage is empty, i'm pulling 99% of the time. I guess I'll find out this weekend, need to take the truck to pick stuff up this weekend which is 250 miles away.

Yes, you will mostly notice it if you are going up a steep hill and it goes into a regen. It may back off 5-8mph for a short period. I have the 4:30 rear a job1 truck. The trucks have know radiator problems. I would buy another. Mine has about 15,000 miles on it only used for towing.

He's always complaining about the thing. Definitely something wrong here. I get 8-9 towing 17k at 13 feet high and 13 city 14-15 mixed driving empty with my 08 F450 automatic. People with manual transmissions have consistently gotten 1-2 MPG better than autos. I do have 4.30 gears...with the 6.4 engine there is no reason to have 4.88s as shown by the fact that Ford discontinued them.

I must say I would be completely happy if I got 14 mpg while not towing. If Ford would come out with an kit to replace the 4.88's I might go for it. I wonder if you must replace the carrier when going with the higher gears?
On another note, I am traveling through Oregon (I was in Springfield, Hi 66stang351 I'm sure I drove right by your place) on my way to Brookings. I noticed a growling noise coming from the engine. I pulled over and saw a small puddle under the truck, on furter inspection I I found a fitting next to the fire wall on the drivers side that was leaking power steering fluid. The only thing I can figure is I drove out of a very steep driveway flexing the frame of the truck in turn flexing the fitting either causing it to crack the tube or tearing the o-ring in the fitting. I made it as far as Coos Bay where I will take it to the Ford Dealer tomorrow. My problem with this is I had the radiator problem where the frame flexed and cracked some the seams of the radiator. The truck seams prone to this kind of problem. What is next?

The frame flex on a F450??? Wow, I find that hard to believe.

Well I spoke with the tech at the Ford dealer this morning. He seemed to think that it was a factory defect in the fitting that cracked. He said he thought when I applied the brakes hard it cracked, so may be my theory was wrong but I dont remember having to brake very hard.
When the service person came in to show me the problem he said it would take 5 days to get the part. I started to get a bit mad and asked if they could UPS Next Day it and they yes reluctantly. Hopefully we will be headed home sometime tomorrow.
