I wouldn't trust my dogs to any kind of temporary fence unless it had a top. They are athletic dogs and, unless it was something like an ex-pen with a top, they could clear it in a millisecond if the right temptation came along.

She loves being outdoors and we are afraid that she may wander beyond her means. Mom and I take turns keeping an eye on her, but we also like to enjoy the camping experience. I've been thinking about either a fence, of some sort, a Patty-O-Room, or a leash.

Please tell me you're not letting her out off-leash. That gives all of us RV'ers and campers a bad name. If you think keeping her leashed and on your site is a hindrance to your "camping experience", then it's best to leave her home or at a boarding kennel.

Ummm - this dad was referencing his 2 year old daughter, not a dog being off leash!

Yes. I was referencing my two year old daughter. Should have been a little more clear. ?. If anyone can help me with that dilemma I would appreciate it. I’m looking at some sort of fence that is easy to set up, easy to maintain, and very low weight.

Well, really, the same applies... two-legger two year olds need a leash as much as do four leggers when running about a CG. I think the ex-pen fence would work well for that application, as long as the contain-ee of whatever species is not left outside alone. Small humanoid could then play about within a reasonably secure area, and parental units could relax a little.

What I want to know is, when are they going to start selling Comfort Zone for HUMANS????? 'Cause some days...

Sorry for the confusion.

Post in pet forum + replying early in a.m. before caffeine kicked in made me assume you were talking about your lab!

If you look at the online pet sites at various types of ex-pens, and then go look around Babies R Us or Toys R Us, you'll see that the hard plastic ex-pens and the hard plastic play pens are essentially the same thing (some are identical), just marketed for a different audience.

We travel with six ex pens. We bought them online from J&B cause their price even including shipping was less than at the local PetSmart type stores.

Each pen is 16 ft long and 4 ft tall - they are allowed at most camp grounds we have stayed in but we usually try to stay only in State parks.

We assemble however many of the pens suits the site we are staying at.

We usually create a fenced area just larger that the space covered by our main awning. With practice I can single handed set up four in about 15 to 20 minutes and they tear down and fold back up even quicker than that.

For the small space behind our entry steps we use a piece of chain link vinyl clad "fabric" - this is pretty neat and easy. The ex pen ends are placed near either side of the steps. Then I just slide the chain link flexible fabric behind the steps and snap connect to the ex pens. This creates a complete and escape proof fenced area and at 4 ft high will contain and protect most all size dogs though ours are small.

This fence is just a great idea whether or not you travel with dogs. It keeps wandering stray animals or, worse, wandering kids out of our little "door yard" with our table and grill and chairs and we have a sense of better security and privacy. We can put cheap plastic tarps over the ex pen walls and when sitting down we have an instant privacy fence and this barrier also keeps overly friendly or nosy neighboring campers away from our entry door.

We NEVER allow our FurKids outside in this fenced area unsupervised but when we are out there with them there is no need for a leash or tether so we and they can be together in safety.

I think we paid about $80 bucks each for the pens and they last forever and the length of chain link fence fabric cost us nothing.

I bought my dog fencing at PetSmart. They are about $80 per section. It comes in 3 foot and 4 foot heights. We use 4 sections to provide a nice excise yard for our dogs. And no, we do not leave them out alone, but, they love being out with us and not having to be on a leash.

While the folding fence is a bit of a pain in the neck for weekend camping trips, it is very nice for snowbirding in South Florida during the winter.

I have two sections of the 4 foot. I suspect my Greyhound could get out if he was really motivated so I wouldn't use it when I'm not nearby.

For Exercise Pens (X-Pens), if you look for Conformance Dog Shows in your area you can usually buy the pens and lids at prices similar to J&B or other mail order suppliers. Some of the pens will come with their hinge disconnected so that you can string a few of them together to make a larger area. They will also sell clips to hold them together (ask the sales guy running the booth). The brass style work much better despite their price. I only used ty-wraps once and they were such a hassle.

To find shows in your area, Google it -- type in "conformance dog show" and your city name.

Dog show people use X-Pens all the time.

I've seen people use roll-up snow fence and these posts that come in various heights. Snow fence is typically 4', security/crowd control fence and plastic mesh may be available in taller heights.
