Fuel consumption

OK I have the ford 460 engine and know it's juicy.

Now how does the Chevy 454 compare to the Ford 460?

Then how does the 454 compare to the Ford V10 triton?

What is the latest Chevy petrol engine?

I have the 454 Chevy chasssis and get an average of 81/2 MPG if I run 55-58 MPH and drops off fast above 62MPH. It has been as low as 6MPG in the mountains and as high as 11 MPG on the flat with no head winds. The 460 Ford is noted to be a bigger gas hog. It has a lot to do with how fast you drive and area you travel in.

I think it was back in 1994 that Motor Home Magazine test drove two identical Tropi-Cal class A's, one equipped with the Ford 460 and the other equipped with the Chevy 454. I distinctly remember that the 454 got better fuel economy by approximately .6 MPG! If someone has that issue or if anyone has access to this issue and works for Motor Home magazine, they can certainly verify this statement. However, it could have been 1994 or 1995. I haven't seen MH Magazine do a one on one comparison since. Both big blocks are gas guzzlers, but the 460 guzzles more gas, but cranks out more HP! Chuck/Bagman.

A freind of mine has a 36ft MH with a v10 and he tells me he gets 5-6 MPG but he drives at 70MPH most of the time. I have a 36ft. MH with the 8.1 chev. and get 8-9 MPG but I drive at 65MPH. My last MH was a 32ft. with 454 chev. and I got 8-9 MPG driving 70MPH. With the 454 if I drove 60 to 65 the trans would down shift on the slightest grade and run in passing gear till you got over the top. With the one I have now the allison trans holds the overdrive gear pretty good on slight grades. A lot of milage depends on how much your rig weighs and how fast you want to drive.

The Ford transmissions went bad fast. They would shift up and down to much. The Chevy's Vortec's have a great transmission tied to them. The Chevy's cost the dealers about $1500 more so they usualy tried to sell the cheaper Fords.

My dad had a 3/4T GMC 2WD, 454 w/4.11; got 8 mpg whether he was towing his 10,000# 5er or driving empty.

My 1T Ford, 4WD, V-10 w/3.73 gets 9-10 loaded with the 2000# TC and towing my 7000# trailer, 12-13 around town, and 14-15 highway.

24' Itasca C with V-10 gets 9.5 - 10.5 driving very conservatively - mostly 50 on back roads & 62 on majors.

The rig weight and size, road conditions, and your driving habits will have far, far more affect on mpg than a choice between the 8.1 and V10.

If you're buying a 2000-2002 MH, the Ford V10 would be my choice over a 454, BUT I would choose the 8.1 with the 5 or 6 speed Allison in model years 2003-2005. Since 2006 (when Ford added 52 hp and a 5th transmission speed), pick the best floor plan and price.

The 454 was noted to burn pistons. I had an older Holiday Rambler (P-30) and a friend had an older Allegro (also a P-30) both with 454's and both of us replaced pistons. I replaced one piston and sold it. He replaced one and the second time ruined the engine. It is now a hunting camp in the woods.
