We will be in Springfield area late Sept / Early Oct. We plan on seeing the historic sites and the Route 66 sites. DW and I like to visit little known places, also. What are the "must see's" in that area?
Thanks

The Lincoln museum in Springfield gets very high marks. I'd also recommend visiting Lincoln's New Salem SP in Petersburg, near Springfield - there's a village there (I believe rebuilt) that is like New Salem was when Lincoln lived there.

Also visit the Lincoln memorial, and rub the nose. You will know when you see it. This is also the sight of his moselium, and contains history relating to his death. When we are down there we also camp at the state park.

You can check out my posts in these threads where I've explained things to do in the Springfield area and where to camp.
One addition - while camping is still permitted at New Salem State Historical Site all during the week, the restored village is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays due to staff cut backs. Also, some of the programs held there are being cut. Some of the historical sites in Springfield are also closed on Monday and Tuesday.
Late Sept-Early Oct should be a good time to visit. If you plan on coming in for weekends expect the state parks to be full. Altho New Salem hasn't filled very often the past couple of years. Sangchris SP, particularly Hickory Point Campground, fills almost every weekend in the fall but Deer Run usually has sites available.
Here are the links to previous posts listing some things to do in Springfield:

Wow, thanks for all the information! It looks like we will be busy. A horseshoe sounds great. And, we have reservations at Double J. Life is good!
This has got to be the best place for RV and travel information.

We were just there the weekend of the eighth. we stayed at Double J. A little bit of highway noise but not bad, ask for a site further away from the highway. They were full the weekend we were there, but the washrooms and showers were always clean, I'd definatly stay there. Lincoln museum is a must we spent three hours there. The cemetary with the tomb also has a very nice veterans memorials, check them out when there. Also went to the first drive in movie in twenty five years, never time at home. Have a good time.

Every restaurant has their own receipe for their cheese sauce. Some places have nothing more than melted velveeta but most places are pretty good. Darcy's Pint, Top Cats, and The Dublin Pub have all gotten good reviews each year for having the best horseshoes. They're all on the south side of Springfield and easy to get to from Double J.

Ditto on Wadcutter's horseshoe recommendations! Darcy's is a crowded place though, unless you're there very early for lunch or dinner. Dublin Pub's taste about the same as Darcy's and they're a lot less crowded.
You will love the Lincoln museum. I think it's the best thing we've got going in this town.
