43 hours in more than 4 years= NOT running the APU enough and the fuel has varnished in the carb and clogged the jets. Onan Service centers only replace the carb, they have no rebuild kits. But, you can rebuild them by taking them apart and cleaning the jet orifices. The gaskets/Orings rarely are destroyed when you take the carb apart. Doug

Surging means running too lean. As other have said, dirt or varnish in the carburator jets. Adjust the main mixture screw if it has one. Many now days don't.

Try running some carb cleaner in the gas. I have had good luck with that. After you get it running ok. Run it at least once a month. To keep the fuel system clean.

Mickbear,
Clean carb with seafoam then change the oil. Sometimes you can have the proper level of oil and the low oil sensor will give false signals at the control board and cause a surge condition even with a new carb and proper tuning. Old oil will foam and carb cleaners will thin oil before you know it. Always change genset oil every 50 hours or every three months during the run season. Winterize with with fresh oil and run for one hour at half load every month.

Where'd you come up with this information?

I also have the Onan 400 generator. On our last trip the generator would surge a little but only when running the AC. We were at about 5,000 feet altitude and I did set the altitude adjustment on the generator. Never had the surging problem before. It's about a year old with 30 hours. I run it at least once a month for an hour or two under 1/2 load to exercise it.
Any thoughts on this? Thanks...
