I have a Coleman Catalytic heater, but I'm wondering if it's safe to run it inside a tent (carbon monoxide?). So far, it hasn't been cold enough while camping to use it, but I was wondering if anyone has tried it. Seems like it would be safe - my tent has the mesh top with a rainfly over it that still allows for some minimal air circulation. Anyone tried it (and lived to tell!!)?

To take chill off or change clothes in front of -- but -- NOT to sleep. Check model to see if O.K. for indoor use. Use ours in PuP and MH(when dry camping) still all O.K.

I have two friends resting peacefully in their graves because of a catalytic heater. They were hunting in the fall and left the heater on, to apparently take the chill off. They were found two days later by a Game Warden, end of story. Apparently not from carbon monoxide but lack of oxygen.

I wouldn't use it without keeping a window or two open, which sort of defeats the purpose. Good idea to warm up the tent first, then turn off the heater when going to sleep, I think. (And while warming it up, make sure to keep a window partially open anyway.)

Okay, that just convinced me. Heater off for sure. I'll stick to the nice heavy sleeping bag and if all else fails - find a nice hotel room. Thanks for sharing the story.

I have several friends that use the my buddy heater. ALWAYS allow for proper ventilation and they are safe. From what I see with the mesh tops in todays tents you won't have a problem.

Uh, not worth the risk in my opinion.
I'd rather use a Down Sleeping Bag and NOT bring a heater inside my tent (and I've backpacked in 29 degree weather in Central Florida).
So I know it can get cold, but....

Seems to me they intended for tent use.

I've used them in tents in the past and won't hesitate to do so again.
Don't go to sleep with them lit and don't light them in the morning to "take the chill off" if you're one who likes to doze rather than jump out of "bed". A propane lantern puts out about as much heat as the small Colemans. When the temperatures are in the low 20's I'll use both!
One of the by producs of burning propane is water vapor, so be careful your tent doesn't get too damp just from trying to heat it.

I use a big buddy heater in my tent during winters. My tent is is 10x17 and I have two ceiling screens about 4x6. During winters I cover the screens with two pieces of tarp. I am sure heat/air still gets out b/c it is not sealed tight. That being said, I run the buddy heater all nite. Once camping it was at least freezing for two nites and my tent was at 80 degrees. I do bring along a co sensor set at about 18 inches off the ground.
If your tent is sealed tight with NO screening then I would find a way to ventilate a little. The big buddy heater has a built in function if not enough air it will shut off.
I have done this for the past 3 yrs and I am still typing today.
