Interesting story about Arctic ice and Antarctic ice. Makes you think. I hope.
Arctic/ Antarctic Ice- the real story

So, who is Steve Goddard and why should we accept his interpretation rather than the National Snow and Ice Data Center - the scientists that actually collected and analyzed the data?
Not saying he's wrong, but just asking for his credentials.

There are only 10 types of people in the world:
Those who know binary and those who don't.

Here's probably the best book on this issue and what can be done.
Lomborg
I have read this book and the details you want, are well supported. Also another book I would recommend for a more general focus is Lomborg's book , The Skeptical Enviromentalist.
I find that Longborg's books are not sweeping generalizations by popular celebrities, or media people, but by a well qualified academic, based on fact, not conjecture.
You might enjoy them.

I think the reason your quote was 'empty' was due to the fact that you revised it when I clicked 'quote'. Only think I can think of. Never had that happen before.

I've worked with some of the people who do the data collection and analysis and the answer is not easily condensed down to a "the ice caps are melting" or "the ice caps are growing". In some regions of the Antarctic, the ice pack is growing. In others, it is shrinking. Just like there are glaciers that are growing while others are shrinking. Guess which ones usually get on the news?

Making predictions from "percentage" change in data over 1 (or even 30) years for ice coverage that has been there for thousands and thousands of years does not do much for me! That is like saying 1% of a $100.00 bank account balance can be quantitively compared to 1% of a $1,000,000.00 bank account balance.

You are correct. In fact Lomgborg, in his books, says that ice is growing in some areas and shrinking in others.
On a separate note, I also think that some scientists who receive grants sometimes find themselves in a bit of a dilemma when they receive grants to prove certain theories and then find the 'facts' don't support what they theorized.
What then ? Hmmmnnn.......
Just a conjecture on my part, but I'm sure it happens.

Added Lomborg to my reading list, Les.
Does this mean you don't think the world is warming up?
Our oldest daughter's "young man" is working on a doctorate in tree ecology and how altitude affects growth patterns. His research location is the canopy of a Peruvian forest on a 10 mile sloping trasverse. Part of his research includes mapping the spread of the trees up the slope as the climate warms.
He's been working in Peru for the last 3 years and has seen enough climatological change and subsequent tree growth pattern changes, that he expect to have his thesis done next year. The climate on that transverse is warming so quickly, he has observed trees growing further up the traverse than they were just 3 years before.
The earth's climate is changing. Whether man is a direct cause of that remains, for me, an open question. All I know for sure is that pumping billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere will, at some point, act like throwing an accelerant on a fire. I personally think that our best actions right now would be insufficient to change any climactic trends. The atmosphere has reached the tipping point and will continue to do so; the situation is beyond our control.
