We are thinking about taking the kids in the next two years, and I say TWO because I have heard it takes two years to get in. We are thinking of either spring break or summer (end of March or June through August). What is the best time to go? We are thinking of trying to do it up right as it will be one of those major memory trips. Is there anything we should be particularly aware of? Any recommendations? I'm thinking the paved site for the extra $200, but should we save the $200? Anything we need to do to the trailer to make our trip better? Any upgrades? Thanks.

We always went in the fall - either Columbus Day or Veterans Day. Crowds were always light then so we could easily see everything and repeat the favorites.
Our one time at the campground, we used a tent. So I would definitely want unpaved for that. Seems like $200 extra for paving is a little much. That is money you could use for a special in-park experience since there is so much to do that you won't be in the CG long anyway.
Spring break and summer are Disney peak seasons, so rates will be highest, and the park the most crowded. Nevertheless, if that's when your kids have off, so be it. You're right to try to get reservations way ahead; 18 months out should still work well for both those timeframes. Spring break the weather down there will be cooler and more pleasant than in the summer, but on the other hand, being from northern IL, you know how lousy & wintry our spring break weather up here is, so keep that in mind.
I think I'd opt for the gravel pad too, especially with that much of a price difference.
Why 2 years? we just booked at FW in early July (08) for Nov. 08.! not a problem. of course thats for mid nov., 1 week before thanksgiving. I wouldn`t even consider the busy times. thats just asking to be agravated, what with the excess people and lines.
But thats just me!

Better to have a bad day of

Those of some of their busiest times at Disney. My favorite time to go is early January...my kids are still out of school and crowds are way down and the temps are anywhere from the 50's to 70's.
The WORST time to go is in the summer...long lines PLUS you get to stand in the lines in terribly hot and humid conditions.

Well, I anticipate a 2 to 2-1/2 day drag from Northern Illinois. I'll have to check for sure. Add a good seven there (minimum) at the park and that makes for over a week and a half. Any way we cut it, the kiddos will miss a week of school plus. I'm not sure what their teachers would say. I agree with lines, traffic, busy times, etc. I'll try the DW for taking the kids out. She's a school teacher going back to work next year, so maybe it's best to get 'er done before she'd get docked id she takes time off. I'm as flexible as a Russian gymnast with my work schedule, so that's a no brainer. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I want to tackle the run with the F-150. I was hoping to have another F-250 (V-10 or diesel) by the time we go mouse hunting.
Unless I'm missing something, all of the sites are paved. The tent section obviously is not paved.
We've been all different times of year and sometimes go two, three times/year. We like the Fall. October to mid-November. Shorter lines. Nice weather.
Enjoy.

I think you might consider what loop to request. First time we stayed in 1500. This was near the pool, store and outdoor theater/campfire area where they showed movies each night. Kids really enjoyed this. Made reservations about 9 mo. ahead.
Second trip we stayed in 800 loop. It was fine, but not so close to the above. But kids were older so it didn't matter. Made reservations 6 mo. in advance, but didn't request any special loop.
Not sure what extra they charge for a paved site. Both we've had were fine.

We are leaving fri. morning at 3 a.m. (15 hour day) and our first stop is Forsyth GA KOA for a nite and then to Disney on sat. should pull in around 3 p.m. sat. we`ll be at FortWilderness for 5 days and 3 in the parks. if we enjoy it we`ll make a longer trip next time.
We are taking our kids out of school for the week, which I don`t like either, but there in 1st and 2nd grade so at this point it won`t be too bad. and the teachers have said not to worry about it.
