Can anyone make suggestions on things to do or nice State park type campgrounds for a mid September ride from NY state to W. Virginia? Haven't figured out a route yet, thought I'd play it by ear. Planning on spending a couple days in Letchworth SP then heading south to the Canaan Valley area on WV South of Morgantown.
I know nothing about either Western Pa. or W. Virginia other then what I see ont he map, which is why I'm going there.

I'm fond of the Allegheny National Forest. I prefer boondocking in the dispersed camping areas. But there are numerous developed campgrounds, both government and commercial. On the NW side of PA., bordering Ohio, Pymatuning State Park would be an excellent choice. If you need a 1 night layover near Morgantown before hitting the Valley, Cooper's Rock SP is fine. The view is spectacular and I bet the fall colors will be nearly at hand.
We go to Parker Dam state Park every year now, and then head up to see PA's Elk. Nice area of the state.
We were at Canaan Valley a few years ago and loved it. My daughter had deer smelling her hand. And We missed seeing a bear there early in the morning. But you may get some masked visiters at night. My wife thought it was a bear, but I heard them chattering and knew it was racoons.

I live in western PA and my wife's family is from WV. If I was going to WVA, StoneWall Jackson Lake is my favorite place. On the way to Caanan Valley you go through Elkins WV. There is a Jellystone campgroud just outside as well as Revelles (not sure is spelling is correct). Both are great bases for travels. Dolly Sods, Blackwater falls are close by.
