I am so excited! I just purchased a CarMax 2005 RAM 3500 DRW with 19k miles on it and the CTD. I purchased 150 miles away and got the chance to tow my other truck home on a trailer with the new RAM. Simply Awesome. The 5.9 is efficient and strong.

Anyway, CarMax offers a 60 month, 75k mile warranty, bumper-to-bumper, for $1700. You MUST purchase the warranty when you by the car, so I did it, but have 90 days to cancel for 100% refund. I think they base their warranty price figure on purchase price ($24k) and NOT vehicle type. So the insurance companies use actuarial figures to assess risk and that's why I'm posting today.

Has anyone with a RAM/CTD booked OVER $1700 in repair expense in the first 100k miles? I know the engine warranty is good till 05/10 (20 months from now) but what about all the other stuff? I know a warranty offers peace of mind which I value at $500 - so really is this warranty worth the chance of $1200 worth of repair? The deduct. is $50 per visit. It's a great warranty and I've used it on other vehicles, but not a complicated diesel pulling 15k up mountains.

If you don't use it you will just brag what a good truck you have. Go with the warranty. Oh, by the way I got 7 transmissions for my 94 on the extended warranty. oh and one more thing, the 94's had SH*T trans.

As good as it sounds, never-ever fall into that trap of a "bumper to bumper" warranty.

The CarMax MaxCare warranty is filled with tiny clauses and exclusions. You must take it to an authorized CarMax repair facility, if not you will pay a bigger co-payment, and in many of the complaints, the CarMax warranty carrier will not authorize repairs unless it's done at a CarMax facility. They have refused to honor their warranty if they rule that it was abused. They need to send their claims guy out to a non approved repair facility, even if it's the Dodge dealership, to OK needed repairs...which takes a day or two sometimes, leaving you carless.

Several States Attorney Generals offices are investigating the many many complaints about the CarMax warranties, Example: declining to cover blown head garskets, making the owner, a single mother of 2, pay to have them removed and taken to a machine shop to be evaluated because the CarMax warranty carrier didn't have an inspector available to evaluate the heads! (California Atty Generals Office regarding the Roseville CarMax.)

This is a typical type of complaint received from CarMax customers.

Just be careful, buy an extended warranty from Dodge if possible. I just bought one from Ford for my 6.0 SuperDuty...no issues yet, but the factory warranty runs out in July 09....!

With a little over 60,000 miles the only problem with our truck was reverse lights had a switch go bad, and the damper to direct heat to the floor needed fixed. I would cash in the warranty.

2003 Jayco 308fbs eagle 33' tt, towed by a 2003 Ram 3500 slt, quad cab dually, cummins diesel ho, trailer towing package, with 6 speed manual. Hauls better 1/2, 3 kids, myself, and a 2003 ez go clays car.. I have added so far, neon lights, clearance lights, back up lights, black light, lift kit, mud tires, and everything necessary to make the golf cart street legal. It's now ready to spend the winter in the garage for more mods. More neon, strobe lights, alarm, a pa system, maintance, and whatever else that comes along. This golf cart does wheelies and travels thru 7 inches of mud when need be. Two honda eu2000i gens twinned to supply the electrical power. Latest addition an 04 Honda Goldwing. You should have the 5/100 power train warranty also (depending on in-service date for expiration) and that is where the real expensive stuff happens anyways. As far as your question about 1700.00, I can honestly say I have not paid the dealer or any other shop 1 penny for something that was broken, as a matter of fact, other than the lifetime LOF that brings me back every 3000, my truck has only been in there once in 50k miles (to have the tire size entered in the PCM after going bigger)

I had a the turn signal switch go crazy on mine, come to find out they over grease the switches when they were manufactured. Also had the center bearing go bad, but it was after I drove threw a flooded street, guess the seal bearing wasn't sealed good enough, probably a China bearing?I the turn signal I fixed myself, I wiped the grease out of it, it was shorting between the contacts. All this happened after 40K miles.

We've had many vehicles and many RVs over the past 45 years and only once might I have broken even on the cost of one of those "things". Can you imagine how much I'd have spent if I'd bought one of those "things" on every vehicle and every RV? Save your money to put in the fuel tank.

This is always a difficult decision for me - balancing a sense of security against the feeling that it's just a rip-off. Last time I bought a warranty it was after a lot of research on potential issues with the vehicle - Volvo AWD XC70. Research showed that the transfer box was problematic and it did fail eventually. It was covered by the warranty purchased. That $850 covered the $3800 replacement when that component failed. Your mileage may vary, so do some research and good luck with how ever you decide to roll!

safe travels,
