Nice truck, congrats on that.

As to the service contract you got: I think I'd dump it, personally. Especially if what FordSooperDooty talks about is indeed true (and I have no reason to believe its not). Even if its not, I think I'd still get rid of the Carmax service contract.

If you would really feel better with a service contract (please remember, we're talking about service contracts, NOT an extended warranty - huge legal difference), then shop around some, there are lots of choices for that. Choices that I'm betting will be better than what Carmax offered you.

If you are a member of a credit union, check and see if they can get you a service contract on the truck through them. Thats what we did, Truliant credit union has an EXCELLENT service contract they can offer. We have such on both our truck (see signature), and the Dodge minivan. And, cool thing about theirs is, if you never use it, you get nearly entire thing REFUNDED, after contract is over. Its almost risk free, haha.

Anyway, enjoy the truck. I'd lose the Carmax service contract, that obviously thats your call.

You are still eligible for the MOPAR extended warranty, but my 2005 2500 has had nothing but normal servicing except for one tag lite bulb, Power train is good for 7 years 70,000 miles, engine for 7 years and 100,000 miles. I have 68,500 and no issues except for tire replacement. Goodrich Rough Terrain lasted about 20,00 and my Coopers about 45,000. I put my Maxxis Winter tires, Big Horn Radials back on until I decide what's next.

We like CarMax and we unfortunately had to use their "Max-Care" plan 3 times for the kid's Saturn. For the money spent on the contract it was a huge saving for the 2 new engines that POJ needed. Be careful, the contract that Max-Care writes has more holes than a sink strainer. For 5 weeks total the kid has been with out wheels while waiting for "authorizations" and "approvals". Read the contract closely, you may find they don't cover anything to do with diesel engines, so what’s the reason for having it? You got a great, time proven truck. Factory coverage has your back for a while. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I've pretty much never been the type to buy insurance when I can self insure (having seen how inefficient insurance is!) so I'll dump it.

The only reason I even bought it was that when you are sitting at the desk, it is now or never. I figured I'd shop it while I figured it out.

I am so excited! I just purchased a CarMax 2005 RAM 3500 DRW with 19k miles on it and the CTD. I purchased 150 miles away and got the chance to tow my other truck home on a trailer with the new RAM. Simply Awesome. The 5.9 is efficient and strong.

Anyway, CarMax offers a 60 month, 75k mile warranty, bumper-to-bumper, for $1700. You MUST purchase the warranty when you by the car, so I did it, but have 90 days to cancel for 100% refund. I think they base their warranty price figure on purchase price ($24k) and NOT vehicle type. So the insurance companies use actuarial figures to assess risk and that's why I'm posting today.

Has anyone with a RAM/CTD booked OVER $1700 in repair expense in the first 100k miles? I know the engine warranty is good till 05/10 (20 months from now) but what about all the other stuff? I know a warranty offers peace of mind which I value at $500 - so really is this warranty worth the chance of $1200 worth of repair? The deduct. is $50 per visit. It's a great warranty and I've used it on other vehicles, but not a complicated diesel pulling 15k up mountains.

By the way, I have an 2005 Dodge Cummins P.U. with 22k miles on the odometer. I just bought Mopar's best bumper to bumper warranty for $1,320.00. I bought the warranty from a Dodge dealership in Iowa. I'm a California resident, and I saved on state sales tax, and also what the dealers charge you locally. It will take us out to 70,000 miles and 4 more years onto our 3year/36 that just expired on the 13th of August 2008.

This warranty totally covers like the original Mopar bumper to bumper. This is "0" deductible! This is "0" deductible!

100k miles and all the following:

Lift pump (69,000 miles) - cost $100 - covered by 7/100 powertrain warranty with $100 deductible.
Stop/turn lamp holder - ~$20. Connectors build up a lot of carbon and need to be replaced - lot's of "Lamp Out" warnings for this.
A/C Blend Door replacement - I haven't done this (yet). I hear this costs between $400 and $800 - not covered by warranty (but should have been).

Other than that, I'm doing just fine.

Having read through all of this, I think I'm going to get a Mopar warranty tomorrow. Thanks for all of the feedback! I think the peace of mind will be nice for $1300 with no deduct. Esp since this was a used truck.

Well the best quote I ended up getting from Mopar was $2800 so I guess I'll stick with the Carmax warranty. It's nice to know you're covered when you're pulling the trailer up a mountain.
